Artists in Residence is Now Launched

Over the past several months, a new program has been taking form in North Shore Collinwood. Northeast Shores and the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC) have been working to develop Artists in Residence, a two-year program that aims to make our neighborhood an even better place for artists to live and work.

Last week, the organizations launched the Artists in Residence grants program. Over the next two years, the program will provide $100,000 in funding to artists who live or work in the North Shore Collinwood neighborhood to support their community arts projects. The partners involved in the project will distribute this grant money in three rounds, with $30,000 available in the first round. The program asks artists to submit their ideas for arts projects that would address one of five priorities identified by neighborhood residents, workers and visitors – telling the story of neighborhood residents; raising the visibility of neighborhood assets; addressing public safety; combating vacancy; or providing opportunities for neighborhood youth. If you are a resident of North Shore Collinwood or work at least 15 hours a week in the neighborhood, you are eligible to compete for a grant of up to $7,500.

Grant funding is just one part of the larger Artists in Residence initiative. Northeast Shores and CPAC are also in the process of launching several other program features, including a new low-interest loan program designed specifically for North Shore Collinwood artists. These loans will support artists who want to create arts-specific space in the neighborhood that’s not always easy to get a residential mortgage to cover. Examples might include conversion of a garage into a recording studio or purchasing equipment to do home-based printmaking. Details about this new offering will be available in early February.

Artists in Residence has been made possible through the investment of several national foundations, including Leveraging Investments in Creativity, the Kresge Foundation and the Ford Foundation, and through additional generous support from a Charter One Growing Communities Grant and funding from the George Gund Foundation.

Weatherization isn’t just for the income-eligible

Attention Collinwood Residents, the Cleveland Energy Saves Program now gives those households that do not qualify for the Housewarming or Weatherization programs the chance to improve their homes energy efficiency. Residents should take advantage of this one-year energy efficiency program. Now you can make those updates to your home to keep you warmer. The new program offers costs incentives that were never available before.

This program is made possible through the City of Cleveland, the Cleveland Housing Network (CHN), and Cleveland Action to Support Housing (CASH). Now, any resident may take part in the benefits of increasing your homes efficiency and cutting down your utility bills.

The new Cleveland Energy Saves Program now gives residents the opportunity to:
• Low Cost energy audits ($50 a savings of over $300) to assess what needs to be done to improve their home’s efficiency and help save money on their utility bills.
• A detailed report with recommendations on upgrades the owner can make to achieve the highest level of energy savings. If the homeowner goes forward with retrofits/upgrade, the audit fee of $50 is refundable
• The improvements report, could include attic and side wall insulation, furnace replacement, programmable thermostat and new windows/doors
• Each homeowner interested in the improvements can assess what improvements will be right for them depending on the cost, incentives/rebates, and payback period. Available rebates reduce the cost of the retrofits by nearly 40 percent.
• CHN can provide technical assistance what will benefit the homeowners to receive the highest savings
• CASH will offer the opportunity to help finance the energy efficiency improvements through 2.3% interest loans for qualified homeowners

It’s hard to believe that the internet was not commonplace when Northeast Shores was founded in 1994. There weren’t cell phones or Wi-Fi, and social media didn’t exist. We’ve come a long way in that last 18 years, and thanks to Waterloo-based design company, No Problem Printing, Northeast Shores has begun updating their online outlets to better suit your community needs. Polensek's Half-truth is more than that

In today's Plain Dealer, the Metro Section reran a "favorite" PolitiFact Ohio story from January 4th.

The story is (or was) about the poor water quality of Lake Erie and Euclid Creek and how Ward 11 Councilman Michael Polensek compared it to third-world quality. PolitiFact gave the story a half-truth because (a) they had a difficult time comparing our water quality to other countries and (b) Polensek was referring to the condition of the water after a storm event (which according to the story is 48% of the time).

We still feel that the story should rate a "mostly true" rating.

Regardless, this water quality issue is currently being resolved with the massive Euclid Creek Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) project that is very noticeable across from the Library on Lakeshore or at the Easterly Water Treatment plant on East 140th and Lakeshore.

We were surprised that the article did not mention that there is now resolution to what Councilman Polensek was rallying around. We welcome when this temporarily disruptive project is complete and we can enjoy a lake and creek that no longer can be compared to undeveloped countries.

Are you looking for something fun to do this evening with the entire family?
Northeast Ohio’s annual holiday cruising celebration returns to East 185th Street tonight at 5 p.m. Convertibles and Jeeps will lower their roofs and enjoy a fabulous wintertime ride down East 185th Street from Lakeshore Boulevard to Interstate 90 at the 2011 Candy Cane Cruise.

The Candy Cane Cruise was created as a unique way to celebrate the holiday season along the main streets and local business districts of the near east side. It injects the hustle, bustle and festivities of a “modern sleigh ride” to eateries, retailers and shops throughout this classic neighborhood.

“We had a quiet inaugural cruise last year on East 185th Street,” said Denise Lorek, community organizer for the Northeast Shores Development Corporation, which sponsors the event. “We’re looking forward to being Cleveland’s premier Candy Cane Cruise event this year.”

The Candy Cane Cruise on East 185 is longer this year and includes more merchants than previous cruises held on Clifton Boulevard on Cleveland’s West Side. In addition, tonight’s cruise is being held a little earlier than last year, said Lorek.
“That’s because we wanted to kick off the holiday season,” she said. “We want people to buy local. We want people to know that we have local restaurants, merchants and stores that offer great items for gift-giving, as well as gift certificates for the holiday season.”

According to Lorek, a number of merchants will offer either special entertainment or treats to both spectators and cruisers.“We have teamed up with the Salvation Army this year,” said Lorek. “It’s bringing the Salvation Army Bell Ringing Band, which will perform songs on bells. That will be right by our newest coffee shop Kool Beanz. Bells and Christmas just seem to go together.”

In addition, the Salvation Army Brass Band will play at the corner of East 185th and Kildeer right near the old LaSalle Theater. There will also be children carolers performing. “It’s a great way to kick off the holiday shopping season, while supporting local merchants,” said Lorek.

Cruisers are encouraged to decorate their vehicles for the holidays and to dress up in holiday attire. The event is free for spectators. The history Cleveland’s Candy Cane Cruise tradition began in 2008 with the Candy Cane Cruise on Clifton Boulevard.
“Cruising during the winter holidays gives the drivers and passengers a chance to celebrate the holiday season in a unique way,” said Dominic Bonacci, Candy Cane Cruise founder.

“East 185th Street is definitely a fantastic cruise route. It’s a classic main street with a long stretch of businesses that are filled with some great architecture and eateries that range from local establishments to fine dining. A variety of retailers will be open to shoppers who enjoy exploring.
“A Candy Cane Cruise is an invitation to anyone to roll down the windows, bundle up the kids and be immersed in the holiday atmosphere,” Bonacci added.

On Dec 2nd, 2011, the East 185th Street Community will be hosting its second “Candy Cane Cruise on East 185” beginning at 5:00 PM. This is a family-friendly event featuring a car cruise of open-top convertible cars and jeeps with bundled up passengers immersed in the spirit of the season. The event is $5.00 and all are welcome to attend! For $5.00 you get a really cool East 185th St. ornament and the opportunity to jazz your car up for the Holiday and cruise East 185th St. for the first time we will have the Salvation Army Bell Ringers and Brass Band playing on the street corners for your entertainment.

The Candy Cane Cruise will begin in the parking lot of the LaSalle Theater at the corner of Chickasaw and East 185th St., and will continue down East 185th until it reaches Lakeshore Boulevard. The car cruise is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM. Once the cruise has ended, participants and attendees are encouraged to explore East 185th to enjoy sounds of the season, food from the area's wide selection of eateries, and to stroll among the area shops and boutiques.

Cars of all makes and models are welcomed including vintage, classic or new Jeeps, coups or sedans. Holiday decorations are encouraged; however, all cars must be road-worthy, all passengers should be wearing seat-belts and nothing should be thrown from the vehicles as this is a street cruise; NOT a parade.

East 185th Street is part of the bustling North Shores Collinwood community, which also includes the Waterloo Arts District. East 185th Street is home to one of the largest collections of locally-owned restaurants in Cleveland, and is conveniently located right off I-90. Transformation of Collinwood big-box store highlights a trend

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Where shoppers once rummaged for bargains, children will slip down a water slide or skid across the bamboo floor of a basketball court.

This retail box turned recreation center promises more bustle for Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood. And the redevelopment illustrates one creative approach to a widespread problem: Empty stores and outmoded shopping centers plaguing landlords and cities.

The former Big Lots store in Collinwood, at 16300 Lake Shore Blvd., sat vacant for years. Retailers passed it by because of its size: 66,000 square feet; its age: decades-old; and its proximity to Lake Erie.

"It was tough," said Keith Hamulak of the CBRE Group Inc. real estate brokerage, which marketed the building. "You do your radius circles, and you're picking up a lot of fish. Retailers felt that they were limited by the lake being so close to them."

The city bought the property in 2006, and politicians squabbled over transforming the site, surrounded by parks, from an eyesore into a community asset.

On Saturday, the building finally reopened as the Collinwood Recreation Center, the city's first new recreation center in more than a decade.

Lockers, a computer area and meeting rooms have replaced bargain-priced kitchen gadgets, furniture, paper towels and toys. Stripped down and refashioned, the former retail space now holds offices and exercise rooms. New, taller sections of the building house a pool and a basketball court.

"The transformation is mind-boggling," said Brian Friedman, executive director of the Northeast Shores neighborhood group. "It has an indoor water park. It has a water slide. It has a pool. And that's all in the place that used to be a big box."

After a recession and a flurry of retail bankruptcies, property owners and public officials are struggling to fill empty stores.

Major retailers are hungry for space, but they're focused on the best shopping centers, in busy locations. With few developers tackling new construction, savvy landlords have found ways to remake prime properties. They're knocking down existing stores, combining spaces or building on parking lots.

Meanwhile, less desirable properties face stagnation, demolition -- or reconstruction as something other than retail.

"I think there are 100,000 shopping centers in the U.S., and you can bet that a lot of those are problematic," said Rich Moore, an analyst who covers real estate companies for RBC Capital Markets in Solon. "Out of those 100,000, there's a big number that will ultimately be something different."

In Northeast Ohio, call centers, car dealerships, technical schools and churches have filled empty big-box stores. Real estate brokers and analysts expect to see more alternative uses of defunct retail space, as the industry weeds out obsolete properties.

Retail vacancy in Greater Cleveland is hovering near 12.6 percent, according to Marcus & Millichap Research Services. At neighborhood and community shopping centers in the region, vacancy inched up to 15.3 percent during the third quarter -- the highest level in years, based on data compiled by Reis Inc., a research company.

Hamulak points out that some long-vacant retail sites do find new tenants.

In Cleveland, CenterMark Development LLC recently launched a $1.25 million makeover of a former Tops Markets store in the Glenville-Forest Hills area. The building, empty since 2006, will become a Save-A-Lot grocery store and a discount clothing retailer.

Collinwood couldn't lure retail back to Lake Shore Boulevard. But Councilman Michael Polensek relentlessly pushed for the recreation center. And City Hall backed it, using bond financing earmarked for capital projects.

The city hopes to see the building achieve the second-highest level -- "gold" -- of certification through the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. Solar panels on the roof help heat water for the showers and keep the power on. Rainwater from the roof collects in an underground cistern, for watering plants. The reception desk and baseboards incorporate salvaged wood and metal.

The frame of the big-box store is still there, underneath a new roof and modern trappings.

"It had good bones, so we put a new suit of clothes on it," said architect Paul Volpe, who designed the project. "And it worked out dandy."

Adopt-A-Beach for November

Join volunteers for the final beach cleanup of the 2011 season on Saturday November 12th from 10am-12pm at Euclid Beach State Park! We will be joined by students from Case Western Reserve University for their CWRU Saturday of Service!

We will meet in the park pavilion at 10am and head down to the beach from there to tally and pick up trash and conduct water quality tests. Gloves, trash pickers, rakes and bags will be provided. Volunteers are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear tennis shoes). Coffee will be provided and refreshments will be served at 12pm. Coit Road Benefit

The annual Coit Road Farmers’ Market Benefit hosted by Fred Griffith of Good Morning Cleveland features live music by Albert Dennis & friends and the taste of the local harvest from area farmers prepared by ten of the region’s finest chefs. Featured chefs include: Matthew Anderson of Unami, Beachland Ballroom, personal chef, Eric Wells, Chad and Brian of Sowfood, Superior Pho, Ryan Cipriani of Angela-Mia Pizza, and Regina Nethery of Arts Collinwood Café. Founded in 1932, the mission of the Coit Road Market is to provide access to affordable locally sourced farmed fresh products to the residents of Greater Cleveland. The current focus is connecting to area residents through participation in community events, advertising and special promotions. The benefit will also provide information about the market, community gardens and local farmers.

Northeast Shores needs your help! We’re launching Picturing Collinwood, a program where we’re giving cameras to 20 neighborhood residents and workers and asking them to help us tell the story of where Collinwood is today. Participants in the program will also be asked to meet once to share their thoughts on what would make the neighborhood an even better place. In October, we’ll show some of the photographs taken by participants at a neighborhood event. Our hope is that this event will encourage even more people to share their thoughts about the neighborhood, too.

All participants will receive a $10 gift certificate to a neighborhood restaurant, and one lucky participant will be randomly selected to receive a $50 gift certificate. If you’d like to join the project, stop by the Northeast Shores office any time between now and September 13th to pick up your camera and some additional instructions. The 20 cameras are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so don’t delay!

VASJ hires new President!

Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School is pleased to announce that beginning July 25, 2011, Richard J. Osborne will become the school's President. Osborne, a 1969 graduate of St. Joseph High School, replaces Brian Menard, who has relocated with his family to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he is Head of Redemptorist Elementary and High Schools.

Inducted into the Cleveland Journalism Hall of Fame in 2007, Osborne has an extensive background in management, marketing and journalism. Previously publisher and editor of Ohio Magazine, Osborne has served as a newspaper editor, magazine executive and radio news director. He also is an author and editor of several corporate histories and other books. He wrote A Community of Faith, a commemorative publication for the Diocese of Cleveland, published in 1998.

"I am enormously pleased and grateful to come home to VASJ," Osborne said. "It is an incredible privilege to work with men and women who embody the Ursuline and Marianist values of educational excellence and service to others. It is little wonder that our students are so accomplished and their achievements are so inspiring. My job will be to facilitate this success so that it continues for many years to come."

VASJ has been operating under a President-Principal model since 2004. In this dual leadership model, the President serves as the chief executive officer and is responsible for overseeing the overall mission and Catholic identity of the school, leading institutional advancement and strategic long-term planning with the Board of Advisors. The Principal serves as the chief academic officer and is responsible for providing leadership for faith community affairs, academic affairs and student affairs. The President and Principal collaborate closely and have a united vision of what the school should be.

VASJ Principal Dave Csank says he is looking forward to working with Osborne to further advance the school's mission. "I am very excited that Richard Osborne was chosen to be VASJ's next President," Csank stated. "He has ties to the school, a love of the school and is completely dedicated to seeing VASJ become one of the top Catholic high schools in Northeast Ohio. In my experience working with Richard on the Board of Advisors, I am confident he has the skills necessary to continue with the positive momentum of the school."

For the last two years, Osborne has served as chairman of the Board of Advisors. "In that role he has come to deepen his appreciation for the gift of his own education at St. Joseph High School," said Margaret Lyons, Secretary for Education/Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Cleveland. "Richard's faith and his successful career will benefit him as he engages others in support of the wonderful students and families served by a remarkable VASJ faculty."

Osborne is a native Clevelander and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati. His wife, Della, is a 1968 graduate of Villa Angela Academy. They have four children and six grandchildren.

Founded in 1990 with the merging of Villa Angela Academy (1878-1990) and Saint Joseph High School (1950-1990), VASJ is celebrating more than 150 years of educational excellence in the Diocese of Cleveland.

The Euclid Beach Blast! was a great success last Saturday! All tolled throughout the day we had close to 450 attendees having a blast watching pop up art take shape on "the wall of doors", cleaning the beach (and picking up 200 pounds of trash!), building a sandcastle and catching some rays, watching a jump rope troop hop in all the way from Africa, chalking the sidewalk, learning about watershed preservation, chowing down on a Cuban sandwich from Jibaro World Eats Food Truck, biking and planting gardens around Collinwood and most importantly jamming to some music from 106.5 The Lake, Radio Disney and live performances from Bill Meyer, Andriana Santiago and Grupo Son Gitano! We could not have had such a great event without the help of many dedicated Euclid Beach Adopt-a-Beach volunteers who spent hours in the hot sun on Saturday keeping everything cool! · The 2011 Ohio State Yo-Yo Contest, organized by the Cleveland Yo-Yo Club, takes place before Walk All Over Waterloo, in the Beachland Ballroom from 9am-4pm. The Cleveland Yo-Yo Club is hosting an after party for the contest from 5pm-9pm.

· Music Saves 7th Birthday Bash is a free early show at the Beachland Tavern with Founding Fathers (5pm), Black Puddle Noise (6pm) and Obnox (7pm) and DJ Fuzzy spinning tunes between sets. The Beachland’s kitchen will have a special cookout menu during the event.

· The 2nd Annual Car Show at the SS&W Boardwalk starts off with the Del Rio Bandits performing outside (4pm) and finishes with a set by Madison Crawl (10pm) inside the SS&W Boardwalk. Car registration is $10 in advance or $20 the day of. Call 216-481-0077 to register.

Waterloo Receives Major Pilot Inititiative

Partners to Invest $500,000 in Cleveland’s Waterloo Neighborhood
CPAC and Northeast Shores Launch Artist Community Development Initiative

CLEVELAND – The Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC) and Northeast Shores Development Corporation have announced a partnership to launch Artists in Residence, a two-year initiative that will explore what artists can do for Cleveland neighborhoods, and what Cleveland neighborhoods can do for artists.

The two-year, $500,000 pilot program will focus its efforts on this relationship in Cleveland’s Waterloo Arts District. The initiative will include:

* A micro-loan program for artists buying or rehabbing dwellings within the neighborhood,
* A micro-grant program to support artists’ work in carrying out community-based arts projects within the neighborhood,
* The development of a number of artist homeownership services, and
* A coordinated local and national marketing campaign on behalf of the program.

Through these activities, Artists in Residence will increase artists’ access to homeownership within the city of Cleveland, while also addressing issues like reducing vacancy and abandonment rates and increasing opportunities for resident leadership development.

The neighborhood was selected by a panel of arts, community development and planning experts through a competitive proposal process. Thirteen Cleveland-based community development organizations submitted a letter of interest to host the pilot program. Five neighborhoods were asked to submit a full proposal before the panel selected Northeast Shores based on judging criteria.

Artists in Residence is made possible through a $250,000 Creative Communities Challenge Grant from Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC). The Creative Communities Challenge Grant program was a one-time competitive grant program open to 15 “Creative Communities” nationwide, made possible through support from the Kresge Foundation.

The Creative Communities program is a nationwide network of organizations working to make improvements in the well-being of American artists. Beach Clean-up this Saturday

Join Adopt-a-Beach volunteers on Saturday June 11th from 10am-1pm for a beach cleanup and projects day at Euclid Beach Park and tell a friend or two or ten!

We need as many people as possible for this!!

Volunteers can either participate in the beach cleanup or several other projects throughout the park including:
1. pulling weeds in flower beds and around park trash/recycling bins
2. putting down drainage gravel around trash and recycling bins
3. putting down plastic stripping around trash and recycling bins
4. making wildflower seed packets
5. installing a lock on the park concession stand to set up our permanent storage facility!

-Remember:

*Volunteers interested in participating in any of the above activities should wear closed toed shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. Disposable gloves, trash bags, trash pickers, SOME rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows and refreshments (coffee, fruit, pizza, chips, salsa-what more could you want!?) will be provided to participants.

*It is also encouraged that you bring any yard tools (rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, clippers) you might have. Just be sure to label them with your name.

The entrance to Euclid Beach Park is at 16250 Lakeshoare Blvd. Cleveland OH 44110
We will start by meeting in the pavilion for coffee and then have at it until 1pm!

Debbie will begin the installation and then you can help finish it up during the 9th annual Waterloo Arts Fest on June 25th. Meanwhile, we would appreciate your help collecting materials for the project. Please drop off any of the following at Arts Collinwood during the next couple weeks;

East 185th Street Cleanup and Planting

Please note all of these plans may be rained out. For some reason, Cleveland is having one of its rainiest seasons ever so it makes it hard to make plans. If you have doubts about what is going on, please call the office at 481-7660 or just look for us on East 185th St. if you see us out, jump in!

Tomorrow May 6th is clean up day on East 185th St. For those of you who have indicated you will help clean up East 185th, here is the tentative schedule for tomorrow. As this is the first year we have had a merchant volunteer to feed us lunch and VASJ is sending a class of students, I am doing this by the seat of my pants. So here goes. We will meet at 11:00 at Muldoon's for lunch. After lunch, we will start at Muldoons cleaning up East 185th St. We will work our way up the street. At 1:00, the VASJ students will start at their end of the street and work their way down the street. Hopefully, we will all meet in the middle with the end result being a nice, clean East 185th Street.

For those of you who have volunteered to adopt a planter box, here are my tentative plans.

On Monday May 9th, mulch will be put down in all of the beds that will take mulch, some of them still have some mulch and some won't hold it in. I will have plants Monday afternoon for those of you who are adopting planter boxes please let me know how you would like to take delivery of your plants. I can drop them off to you or you can pick them up from me. Just let Denise know. The rest of us will start planting Tuesday.

The April Beach Clean-up went well, even through some very rainy conditions. Here is an update from Stephen Love, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Euclid Beach Adopt-A-Beach team:

On Saturday April 16th, volunteers from Accenture Management Consulting, college and high school students and neighborhood residents came together to clean and screen the Euclid Beach! This was our second beach cleanup of 2011 and even in the rain and wind volunteers managed to collect an absolute hands down record of over 300 pounds of trash, 80 pounds of which was recycled! Thanks to these hard working volunteers we collected over 850 cigar tips, close to 200 plastic bags bottles and cans and well over 100 plastic and paper bags!

We also celebrated the installation of 3 new trash and 3 new recycling bins at the park installed at the picnic pavilion and at the two stairwell entrances onto the beach. Joining us for the long awaited dedication was Naturalist Carol Ward and Park Manager Jim Siekel from The Cleveland Lakefront State Park along with Brian Friedman from Northeast Shores, April Mather with The Alliance For The Great Lakes and Councilman Polensek.

But this is all only the beginning of a long and active year ahead! With summer around the corner, we are going to need your help! Now more than ever join volunteers just like you this along with 7,000+ other volunteers across the Great Lakes as we tackle some of the toughest months of the year for beach and water quality! Remember, our Great Lakes constitute over 1/5 of the earth's fresh surface water. Let's start by taking care of the beaches in our own community!

Our next beach cleanup will be on Saturday May 21st from 10am-12pm at Euclid Beach Park!

FEMI KUTI COMES TO BEACHLAND; ROCK HALL ASKS, CAN MUSIC BE CLEVELAND’S WEAPON?

While he was running for president, Nigerian Afro pop founder and heavyweight champion Fela Kuti declared the neighborhood around his Lagos nightclub to be independent of the rest of Nigeria. He called his neighborhood the Kalakuta Republic.

The familiar-in-Cleveland phrase “arts district” is way out of its league, here, but bear with me if you can stand it. The tiny nation was anchored both spiritually and economically by Kuti’s nightclub, The Shrine, the de facto religious shrine where Kuti performed each night. According to the documentary Music Is The Weapon, The band would start playing late at night, break for sacred ritual at one or two in the morning, and then continue the party until dawn.

Every aspect of Fela Kuti’s life, it seems, was extreme. He was charismatic like Elvis. He founded a political party (Movement Of the People) in response to government corruption and a general failure to lead in Nigeria. The government responded to his political ambition by sending 1000 solders to raid the Shrine. They brutally beat people, including women and children. They threw his mother –a political figure in her own right–out a second story window. Days later she would die of injuries. Afterward Kuti took 27 women under his care by marrying them all in a single ceremony. They were his “queens” –the singers of his choir who gave his music a mighty rhythmic punch. The music of the Kalakuta republic and its nightclub shrine employed hundreds of Nigerians. When Fela Kuti died of AIDS in 1997, more than a million people attended his funeral.

North Collinwood is going to feel a little like the Kalakuta Republic this week as Femi Kuti, son of Fela, brings his band Positive Force to the Beachland Ballroom. His sound is a little more western than his father’s, a little more hip hop, and – he has said—a little more jazz.

I’ll wager that more than one Cleveland music fan has already referred to the Beachland as a shrine. The former social is a mainstay not only on Cleveland’s music scene, but also for the economy of the Waterloo neighborhood. It’s the main attraction, bringing people and new investment into the neighborhood.

Indeed, up and down Waterloo, new shops have popped up, drawn by the neighborhood’s independent musical vibe, and adding to it. Even the Northeast Shores CDC is trying to leverage the attraction, by marketing the neighborhood’s low-cost houses to musicians.

Meanwhile, Beachland co-owner Cindy Barber will explore the question of whether rock and roll can revive neighborhoods the following week as part of a panel discussion hosted by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Changing Gears, the public radio collaboration between NPR stations in rustbelt cities struggling to re-invent themselves.

Euclid Creek Tunnel Groundbreaking Set for April 20, 2011

Cleveland (April 12, 2011) – The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the Euclid Creek Tunnel on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Sewer District’s Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant. The groundbreaking event will feature remarks from area leaders as well as a symbolic shovel ceremony.

The Euclid Creek Tunnel is a $197 million project that will capture combined sewer overflows, or CSOs, drastically reducing raw sewage that enters our waterways during heavy storms. Construction is scheduled to begin on Euclid Creek Tunnel in April, 2011, and will continue for four years.

Two additional large-scale construction projects will be integrated with the Euclid Creek Tunnel. The Tunnel Dewatering Pump Station is an $80 million project that will pump sewage out of the storage tunnel to the Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. Upon completion of the Euclid Creek Tunnel, the Sewer District will begin construction on the Dugway Storage Tunnel, which will further reduce combined sewer overflows in the area.

“When all three projects are complete, one billion gallons of combined sewage will be captured each year and not discharged into Lake Erie,” said Kellie Rotunno, Director of Engineering and Construction, NEORSD. “Projects such as this not only benefit the environment, but Clevelanders are put to work and the local economy benefits as well.”

The Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant is located at 14021 Lakeshore Boulevard in Cleveland. Due to homeland security regulations, a photo i.d. is required to enter our facility. Closed-toe shoes and long pants are recommended.

About ECT:
The Euclid Creek Tunnel will start in Bratenahl, south of Interstate 90, and continue northeast to the District’s Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant. There, the tunnel will continue under Lake Erie for about 3000 feet and pass under the shoreline near Green Creek at East 152nd Street. The tunnel will then head east, following Lake Shore Boulevard and Nottingham Road, and end at St. Clair Avenue.

The Euclid Creek Storage Tunnel will be located 190 to 220 feet below ground. The tunnel will be 18,000 feet long, with a diameter of 24 feet. It will have the capacity to hold 52 million gallons of combined stormwater and wastewater.

About CSOs:
Greater Cleveland’s earliest sewers (primarily within the City and its inner-ring suburbs) are combined sewers. Built around the turn of the 19th century, these sewers carry sewage, industrial waste, and stormwater in a single pipe. During heavy rains, there is a dramatic increase of water flowing through the combined sewers. When this happens, control devices may allow some of the combined wastewater and stormwater to overflow into area waterways—such as Lake Erie and Euclid Creek—to prevent urban flooding. This event is called a combined sewer overflow, or CSO, and harms our clean water environment.

As many of you know, the impending Combined Super Overflow (CSO) project will have a dramatic impact on our neighborhood's water quality in the long term. Unfortunately, the construction phase will be a bit disruptive in the short term.

This project is about to launch and you are invited to the groundbreaking event. See below:

Dear Friends:

As councilman representing Cleveland’s 11th Ward, I would like to personally invite you to an historic groundbreaking on Friday, April 20, 2011, at 11 AM, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the long-awaited Euclid Creek Tunnel project. Please note the date change due to NEORSD scheduling conflict!

The Euclid Creek Tunnel project is a $197 million endeavor that will capture combined sewer overflows, or CSOs, thereby drastically reducing raw sewage that enters Euclid Creek and our lakefront during heavy storms. The holding tunnel will be located 190 to 220 feet below ground, and will be 18,000 feet long, with a diameter of 24 feet. It will have the capacity to hold 52 million gallons of combined stormwater and wastewater. Construction is scheduled to begin on the Euclid Creek Tunnel this April and will continue for four years.

In addition to the Euclid Creek Tunnel, the main staging area near Nine Mile Creek, will be used for two additional large-scale construction projects. One being, the Tunnel Dewatering Pump Station, which is an $80 million project that will pump sewage and wastewater out of the Euclid Creek storage tunnel to the Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. The second will be the construction of the Dugway Storage Tunnel, which will further reduce combined sewer overflows from Bratenahl Village east along the lakefront. Once completed, instead of discharging into the environment, all three projects will capture 1 billion gallons of raw sewage, which will be treated at the Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant at East 140th Street and Lakeshore Blvd., in the Ward 11 community.

Directions to the groundbreaking:
The groundbreaking location is near Nine Mile Creek south of I-90. From I-90, head south on E.140th approximately six blocks. At Deise Rd. turn west. Then take a left onto E. 136th Street and then a right into the construction site. Drive through the fenced area (it will be unlocked). Drive to south side of property on the gravel road. NEORSD Staff will be on-site to direct attendees.

Given the nature of the ceremony site, all those planning to attend should wear sturdy shoes and/or boots and dress for the weather. This is Cleveland!!

More about Euclid Creek Tunnel Project (ECT):

The Euclid Beach Adopt-a-Beach team braved the weather for a late winter/ early spring beach clean-up recently. Here is their write-up of another fabulous clean-up from our dedicated group of volunteers:

On Saturday March 19th, volunteers from The Collinwood Masonic Lodge #582, a Women's Rugby Team, General Electric employees, college and high school students and neighborhood residents came together to clean and screen the Euclid Beach! This was our first beach cleanup of 2011 and we managed to collect an absolute hands down record of 234 pounds of trash, over 75 pounds of which was recycled! Thanks to these hard working volunteers we collected over 850 cigar tips, close to 200 plastic bags bottles and cans and well over 150 plastic and paper bags! The most "unique" items collected included a freezer door and a construction barrel!

But this is only the beginning of a long and active year ahead! With summer around the corner, we are going to need your help! Now more than ever join volunteers just like you this summer along with 7,000+ other volunteers across the Great Lakes as we tackle some of the toughest months of the year for beach and water quality! Remember, our Great Lakes constitute over 1/5 of the earth's fresh surface water. Let’s at least take care of the beaches in our own community!

Artist Statement for First Waterloo Tower Installation

Several months ago, the first installation by Robin VanLear and Ian Petroni was installed on the Waterloo Tower located at the corner of East 156th Street and Waterloo. Installations on the Waterloo Tower result from a collaboration between Arts Collinwood and Northeast Shores with committee input from neighborhood residents, artists, and merchants.

The following is the artist's statement about this initial installation.

The House at Waterloo is the latest installation in a series The Lighting of Hill House that began in 1991 with an installation/performance at the Montgomery Museum of Art for their annual Flimp Festival. Since then, Hill House installations have been displayed in the 1990’s in Rockefeller Park for the Art Through the Park event, in Wade Oval and in the new sculpture gallery at the Cleveland Museum of Art in conjunction with the annual Winter Lights Lantern Festival.

The iconography of Hill House references several concepts. First perhaps is the most obvious reference to owning one’s own home as the ultimate achievement of the American Dream. Ironically in Hill House, while the house is placed on the proverbial pedestal to reference it’s importance, it has also become reachable by a non-functional ladder. In the earlier Hill Houses, the house itself, which was wrapped in canvas, was quite similar in proportion to a monopoly house and, while it had an entryway, there in fact was no way to get in. Entre to this most recent Hill House (nearly a twin to the Hill House recently ensconced on Wade Oval for the 2010 Lantern Festival) is even more unattainable because the entrance sits 17 feet in the air and the doorway itself is designed for a child. Neither could the open mesh structure of the walls, floor and roof support an adult weight.

While the original Hill Houses were also lit from within, because of their opaque canvas surface they glowed functioning as an orb of light, almost like the moon come to earth. These two latest Hill Houses are more akin to lighthouse beacons. Because of the way the expanded steel walls fragment the light, at times it is only slightly visible and at other times it shines strongly. This time too, the interior light source is also an important part of the concept. Fabricated of copper tubing and mesh by Ian Petroni, it appears to be growing within the house interior suspended in mid air as some sort of urban bromeliad.

The materials of these two latest Hill Houses are specific too to a rust belt city such as Cleveland, where the weathering of metal surfaces is a frequent inspiration to artists. In this instance, the house exterior began as a sort of soft grey color and the lamp was a brilliant copper. As the installation engages with our weather, the house and its support structure will turn a deep orange and the lamp will began to take on a lovely blue green patina.

The Hill House series is conceived and designed by Robin VanLear. Mike Moritz fabricated the House. Ian Petroni created the lamp.

This initial installation is the first of what we hope is a series of interesting, conversation-starters for the neighborhood and our visitors. Future installations are not yet set and you too can participate in a future Waterloo Tower Installation. Senior Shuttle Available

Councilman Michael Polensek has committed $10,000 to introduce a new transportation program for seniors in Ward 11. Senior Transportation Services are now available for senior adults living in Ward 11. The six month pilot program will be provided through the Cleveland Department of Aging and the Senior Transportation Connection (STC).

To be eligible to take advantage of this service, Ward 11 residents must be 60 years of age or older and have limited options for transportation. Seniors that are eligible for this service will be provided two one-way trips per week that have been scheduled at least two days prior. A fare of $1.00 per one way trip will be charged. Drivers are not permitted to make change on the van or accept tips. Cancellation of trips must be made by 7 a.m. the day of the scheduled trip.

Trips will be available to eligible residents during business hours of Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Medical related trips will be made a priority and must be located within Cuyahoga County. Riders who wish to make personal shopping trips or run errands will be limited within the city of Cleveland and restricted to five shopping bags per trip.

Residents interested in this service must call the Cleveland Department of Aging to register at 664-2833. Department of Aging intake workers will verify the home address of eligible residents who will then be referred to the Senior Transportation Connection.

“I am very happy to announce Senior Transportation Services to the golden aged members of the Ward 11 community who often have trouble getting to doctor appointments or the grocery store for basic necessities,” said Councilman Polensek. “This program is designed to improve the quality of life of seniors in our ward and I hope that residents will take advantage of this great service.”

The Neighborhood Tasted Good

If you were not at the Taste the Neighborhood on Tuesday, February 22nd, you missed out on some wonderful food and festivities. For the third year in a row, 20 local restaurants donated food or beverages to this fundraising event for Northeast Shores. Northeast Shores would like to thank the following restaurants for their generosity, Beachland Tavern, Bistro 185, Blitz Barbecue, Boardwalk Tavern, B & M Bar B Que, Café @ Arts Collinwood, Café Corso, Chili Peppers, Congin’s Pizza, Convenient on 200th St., Dave’s Supermarket, Fresh Catch, Giorgio’s Oven Fresh Pizza, Gostilna at Knezak, Grovewood Tavern, Gus’s Diner, Lithuanian Hall, Lucky’s Restaurant, Muldoon’s Saloon & Eatery and Scotti’s Restaurant. These restaurants all donated their food and time to this event to make this our best ever Taste the Neighborhood Award Ceremony.

For the first time in the three years that we have been hosting this event, we had a record, sold out crowd. Board Member Cindy Barber and Councilman Polensek were overheard saying “What a wonderful event the Taste the Neighborhood is because it brings the community together”. We had merchants, restaurant owners and residents all coming together to celebrate our accomplishments.

This year for the first time, we had a female North Collinwood Hall of Fame winner - Jan Dean. Jan has given many hours of herself volunteering for various organizations from the Auxiliary Police to the Senior Advisory Council. Jan was also a founding member of the 5th District Police Community Relations Board. Jan was appointed to the Community Relations Board by then Mayor George Voinovich. Jan has been a Member of City Club since 1995. Jan commented that “she does not volunteer her time to be awarded for it. She volunteers because it is for the good of the community to do so”.

We also honored the Hospice of the Western Reserve with the Investment of the Year Award for their purchase of the Christian Life Center. By purchasing the Christian Life Center, Hospice showed their support and commitment to this area.

Blue Arrow Records owners Pete and Debbie Gulyas were given the Business of the Year Award. Pete and Debbie own and operate three different businesses on Waterloo including Blue Arrow Records and Blue Arrow Boutique. In addition, Debbie formed the Waterloo Alley Cats Project to help the feral cat population in the Waterloo area. If you would like to help Debbie provide food and medical care for the feral cats in the Waterloo Business District, you can make donations to the Waterloo Alley Cats via Northeast Shores.

Block Club of the Year went to the Windward Block Club. Pete and Karen Wolfgram along with the Windward Block Club adopted planter boxes on East 185th St. they are a close group who really look out for each other. Pete and Karen show their commitment to their neighborhood by being long time members of Northeast Shores. Pete is also on the Safety Committee of Northeast Shores.

For our listening pleasure, we had music provided by One fun Dj and entertainment by Deep 3.

A Chinese Auction finished off the night. We had over 30 baskets donated to Northeast Shores for us to raffle off. Our guests went home with some really nice baskets that were donated by residents, businesses and board members. A fun night was had by all who attended.

The Grammy’s are not the only award ceremony going on. Northeast Shores has their award presentation happening Tuesday February 22, at our annual Taste the Neighborhood event.

Taste the Neighborhood is the only fundraiser that Northeast Shores Development Corporation does each year. We do this event once a year to try to raise funds to use in the North Shore Collinwood neighborhood and recognize people and businesses in the area that go above and beyond to help improve the quality of life in North Shore Collinwood.

This year’s event promises to be the best Taste the Neighborhood in the three years that we have been hosting this event. Again, We have over 20 restaurants and eateries donating food. North Shore Collinwood boasts some of the best ethnic food around. We have Greek, Italian, Slovenian, Lithuanian, Croatian, Irish, Mexican, Barbecue, comfort food and desserts from all over North Shore Collinwood. So far, the restaurants participating this year will be Arabica, Bistro 185, Grovewood Tavern, Gus’s Diner, Muldoons, Café at Arts Collinwood, The Boardwalk, Dave's Supermarket, Fotina’s, B& M Barbecue, Beachland Tavern, Chil Peppers, Congin’s Pizza, East 200th St. Convenient, Cakes by Sweetwater, Gostilna at Knezak, Lithuanian Hall, Blitz Barbeque, Georgio's Pizza, Scotti’s Italian Eatery, Slovenian Workmen's Hall, VASJ Culinary Club plus our local sausage shops.

Beach Cleanup Round-up

For whatever reason, today appears to be the day that everyone is officially done with winter. Since we have received so many complaints today about the weather, we thought it would be fun to remember the final beach cleanup at Euclid Beach. Don't you remember that cool breeze off the Lake as your feed slide into the warm sand?

If you don't, here are some words from our volunteer coordinator, Stephen Love, that may remind you.

On Saturday November 13th 2010, volunteers from The Brush High School Key Club, Case Western Reserve University, Baldwin-Wallace College, Cleveland State University, Drink Local, Drink Tap and community members came together to clean Euclid Beach!

This beach cleanup was our last of the year before winter but thanks to some unseasonably warm weather, it was our largest beach cleanup to date with close to 50 volunteers! When all was said and done, we managed to collect over 70 pounds of trash and 35 pounds of recyclables! Among our most collected items, we found close to 800 cigar tips, 450 pieces of plastic and 250 caps and lids to name only a few!

We hope you join the Euclid Beach Adopt-a-Beach Team when we resume our regularly scheduled beach cleanups in March 2011! Be sure to read about any updates on our facebook page and to see our spring/summer 2011 beach cleanup dates!

Cupid is coming two days early to the Waterloo Arts District! UpStage Artisan Alley, a fresh, indie, pop-up boutique and craft show, opens its doors from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Cleveland’s Slovenian Workmen's Home (15335 Waterloo Rd.).

The event will serve as a fundraiser for UpStage Players, a local, non-profit children’s theater company, as they gear-up for their spring musical, Seussical: The Musical. In addition to raising funds for this accomplished organization, UpStage Artisan Alley’s mission is to showcase the talents of Northeast Ohio artisans in an intimate, family-friendly atmosphere, while allowing patrons to shop for themselves and their loved ones.

UpStage Artisan Alley will feature a variety of talented artisans from around Northeast Ohio. Patrons can choose from handcrafted bath and body products, hand-painted keepsakes and magnets, canvas art, jewelry, crocheted items, last-minute Valentine’s Day gifts and more!

The event will also feature a rehearsal from the UpStage Players, face painting, food and refreshments, raffles, prizes…and an opportunity to socialize with the cast, crew and staff of UpStage Players and local artisans.

UpStage Artisan Alley is more than just a craft show. It is an event that will incorporate theater arts and other artistic mediums in a harmonious forum of support for one another. The event’s success will further demonstrate that the Waterloo Arts District is a unique destination for all Northeast Ohioans.

Upstage Players is a non-profit professional children's theater group run by an all-volunteer staff in Cleveland, Ohio. The organization was founded in 1995 with 30 children and a vision to create love and respect for the arts. They have evolved into a strong group that uses theater as a vehicle to teach leadership, creativity and responsibility to nearly 100 children today.

Although the UpStage family has grown tremendously over the years, their no-cut policy remains unchanged. The children of UpStage Players come from varied backgrounds, yet share the same drive to optimize their potential. They hail from a variety of communities, including: Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Bratenahl, Euclid, Eastlake, Lakewood, Mayfield, Mentor, Richmond Heights, Willoughby, Concord and Willowick. In addition, the diverse cast/crew of UpStage Players is headed by an unpaid staff and supported by an army of volunteers dedicated to transforming everyday kids into accomplished artists.

Upstage Players provides many benefits for their artists, including building self confidence, encouraging self-esteem, providing social outlets, promoting responsibility and leadership and providing a fun, safe haven. In addition to its artistic value, UpStage Players brings communities together and gives kids something to do. The organization produces numerous shows throughout the year, including a spring musical, an improvisational troupe and the Upstage Underground summer show.

The UpStage Players spring musical Seussical: The Musical, will take place on April 15th and 16th at 7:30 p.m. and April 17th at 2:30 p.m., also at the Slovenian Workmen’s Home. Recycling in 2010

Northeast Shores staff members are committed to efforts to keep our office more sustainable.

Recently, our recycling coordinator, John Boksansky, shared with us our totals from 2010.

Northeast Shores staff has been able to divert 280 LBS of paper, cardboard, plastic and glass to the City of Cleveland recycling containers.

45 LBS of ½ clean paper was reutilized at an elementary school which uses it for copying.

Several containers of coffee grounds and food waste we diverted to the garden compost pile via Denise.

We provide access to the Weatherization program which heats houses in Collinwood and parts of Euclid.
We provide access to the Paint Program through a partnership with the City of Cleveland.
We provide technical help to businesses interested in the Storefront Renovation Program.
We help new businesses start up and succeed in North Shore Collinwood.
We help people write grants to support their volunteer activities and then help them manage their grants once they are obtained
We buy houses, rehab them and then sell them to qualified buyers.
We help start Community Gardens.
We help start Block Watches.
We are a partner in the rehab of the Lakeshore Village Apartment complex.
We just bought the LaSalle Theater.
We have parades down E.185th St.
We help promote the business districts and help them with branding projects which results in new banners in the business districts.
We have helped bring over 42 million dollars in neighborhood investment to this area in the last 5 years.

Christian Fellowship Church Coming Down

As mentioned in this blog before and reported in the Plain Dealer previously, the community has maintained a long, drown-out debate over the structure erected in the rear of the Christian Fellowship Church (located on Lakeshore Boulevard).

The Plain Dealer published a story today that shared plans for the demolition of this structure. While we are saddened that this story didn't end in a win-win conclusion for both the church and the community, we are very excited that this ongoing problem is nearing final resolution.

Euclid Creek Dam Demolished

The plan to restore the water quality at Euclid Creek completed a major step in early December when one of the six dams that choke the creek was destroyed.

While this dam was not technically in the North Shore Collinwood neighborhood, any and every effort to improve the water quality in Euclid Creek is critical because the creek terminates inside our state park and then flows into Lake Erie. As such, every improvement to Euclid Creek eventually improves our water quality and fishing opportunities in the creek.

First Annual East 185 Candy Cane Cruise a Solid Start

On a bitter cold Friday night, Northeast Shores Development Corporation and the Alive on East 185 Committee hosted the first annual Candy Cane Cruise. For slightly more than two hours, visitors to the district drove up and down East 185th Street honking and spreading holiday cheer.

Registration for the event occurred in front of the Lithuanian Hall. Participants received an ornament emblazoned with logos of the Candy Cane Cruise and East 185th Street. In addition, the registrants received a goodie bag with items donated by many neighborhood businesses and institutions including VASJ High School, Euclid Hospital, Key Bank, Huntington Bank and PNC Bank. Of course, goodie bags included copious candy canes too!

Participants were encouraged to stop at various locations along East 185th Street for special events during the event. Arabica Coffee hosted trick demonstrations from the Cleveland Yoyo Club as well as historical artifacts were on display thanks to Euclid Beach Park Now. “This was a strong foundation for another great promotional event for the district”, said Denise Lorek, Northeast Shores Community Organizer. “Coming right on the heels of Breakfast with Santa was stressful but it is nice to have a wintertime district-wide event to add to the early summer Alive on E185 Parade and Sidewalk Sale.”

A favorite of this writer was the free hot cider provided by Scotti’s. After standing outside for several hours registering cars, the cider really helped keep me warm. Thank you to all that participated and let’s start planning a bigger and better Candy Cane Cruise for 2011.

At a recent public meeting, it was announced that Cleveland Public Art is seeking basic one page letters of interest for the public art components planned for the new Collinwood Recreation Center. The deadline was extended to this Monday, December 20th so start typing as soon as you are done reading this posting.

East 185th St. will NOT be closed and regular traffic will be maintained. The mix of regular traffic and cruising convertibles will only add to the lively atmosphere of E.185th St.

This is not a parade so throwing things from your vehicle is prohibited. Your vehicle must be road-worthy at all times and all traffic laws (including seat belts and child safety seats) must be observed.

Your First Lap

We will gather at Muldoon’s parking lot just before 5pm. A VW Passat Wagon will lead our first cruise lap and then you are free to cruise, eat, cruise, shop as you wish.

During the Cruise

Show off your holiday spirit as you cruise the official cruise route! Turn up the festive music on your car stereos and wave to other participants as well as spectators enjoying the spectacle.

You do not have to Cruise the entire time! You are encouraged to pull over and visit the many unique merchants that line the areas. Be sure to take advantage of the many specials and attractions they are offering during the evening.

Be sure to visit the boutiques and eateries of East 185th St.!

Perhaps do a few laps before warming up with a hot beverage. A few more turns on the route and then enjoy some of the special displays or do a little Holiday shopping of your own.

If you see a friend by all means take them along so they can experience the evening from your perspective! As long as all driving rules are followed you can enjoy the Cruise with friends and family. Feel free to drop off some passengers to shop along East 185th St. or pull over if you see a friend and have them join you for a lap or two.

The event will take place regardless of the weather. If it’s raining the obvious difference is that convertibles will likely have their tops up. However, the merchants will still be offering all their special attractions for the evening so the Holiday Spirit will still be enjoyed.

East 185th Street Hosts First Candy Cane Cruise

On Dec 17th, 2010, the East 185th Street Community will be hosting its first ever “Candy Cane Cruise on East 185” beginning at 5:00 PM. This is a family-friendly event featuring a car cruise of open-top convertible cars and jeeps with bundled up passengers immersed in the spirit of the season. The event is free and all are welcome to attend!

The Candy Cane Cruise will begin at Villaview and East 185th, near Muldoon’s Saloon & Eatery, and will continue down East 185th until it reaches Lakeshore Boulevard. The car cruise is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM. Once the cruise has ended, participants and attendees are encouraged to explore East 185th to enjoy sounds of the season, food from the area's wide selection of eateries, and to stroll among the area shops and boutiques.

Convertible owners are invited to register to participate in the Candy Cane Cruise on East 185th by emailing Denise Lorek at dlorek@northeastshores.org. Convertibles of all makes and models are welcomed including vintage, classic or new Jeeps, coups or sedans. Holiday decorations are encouraged; however, all cars must be road-worthy, all passengers should be wearing seat-belts and nothing should be thrown from the vehicles as this is a street cruise; NOT a parade. While supplies last, registrants will receive a free special collectible souvenir ornament!

Arts Collinwood Hires Executive Director

This past fall, founder and Executive Director Sarah Gyorki announced that she will be leaving Arts Collinwood. Immediately, the Arts Collinwood Board of Directors (with that assistance of Janus Small) swung into action to find a new Executive Director fo this important neighborhood organization.

Last Thursday, Arts Collinwood announced that Cheryl Carter will be the new Executive Director for the organization starting in January.

The following is the press release that we received regarding the announcement:

The Board of Directors of Arts Collinwood in Cleveland, Ohio, has hired Cheryl A. Carter as Executive Director, effective January 1, 2011. “We were simply astounded that out of a group of such strong and qualified applicants that a single candidate could stand out from the crowd,” says Bridget Caswell, President of the Board and Chair of the Executive Director Search Committee. “We are excited to have hired our next Executive Director to take Arts Collinwood in a new direction – above and beyond where we have ever been able to go before. Cheryl Carter comes to Arts Collinwood with nearly twenty years of experience in the nonprofit arena with a significant portion of that time having been devoted to fund development and raising millions of dollars in support of organizations such as the Western Reserve Historical Society; Girl Scouts of the Western Reserve; the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; Achievement Centers for Children; Neighborhood Centers Association; and most recently, the Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern Ohio Chapter. In addition, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to neighborhood development and revitalization through the arts. Ms. Carter co-founded Art House, Inc. in 1999 with other resident artists like herself who were dedicated to the belief that the arts enrich lives and help create better communities. Showing strong leadership within the Brooklyn Center community and laying a firm foundation for future organizational growth, she served as Art House, Inc.’s first Board President. She will bring the same level of dedication, expertise in fundraising, and experience engaging the community in neighborhood-based arts organizations with her to Arts Collinwood. Ms. Carter received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hiram College having majored in studio art and minored in photography and English literature. She will complete her Master of Interdisciplinary Studies degree from Hiram College in the spring of 2011. Additionally, Ms. Carter enjoys art in its various media including independent film and has volunteered for Independent Pictures. She is an accomplished photographer having shown her work throughout Cleveland. Ms. Carter and her two sons make their home in Solon, Ohio.

Arts Collinwood believes that a flourishing arts community enriches a neighborhood’s quality of life both economically and culturally. By partnering with local merchants, neighborhood associations, schools and artists, Arts Collinwood encourages more artists to live and work in North Collinwood, and offer residents more opportunities to engage in the arts. The goal is to support a stimulating arts environment and to encourage continuing education in the arts by offering a wide variety of cultural activities for residents of all ages. The Arts Collinwood building is located in the Waterloo Arts District and features the Arts Collinwood Gallery, a Cafe, artist studios and a large community center space for classes, rehearsals and performances. The cafe features live musical acts and independent films. Started with the idea that a thriving arts community can increase the quality of life in a neighborhood, the building became a multi-use arts center after converting blighted property, transient housing and vacant storefronts into usable space.

Cheryl Carter is taking the helm of Arts Collinwood from former Executive Director and Arts Collinwood founder Sarah Gyorki who resigned her position in October of this year to pursue other opportunities. “I am in awe of Ms. Gyorki for having founded such a vibrant and ambitious neighborhood arts center and cannot fully express my gratitude to her for her vision and leadership that created such a magnificent space,” remarks Ms. Carter. “Although I understand that the work ahead will be challenging, I am eager to rise to the challenge, engrain myself into the Collinwood neighborhood, and help to build a stronger sense of community through the engagement and interaction with art. Recreation Center Public Art Meeting

I hope that you have had the opportunity to see the construction going on at the site of the new Collinwood Recreation Center. If not, then you need to take a drive by the site and see the work being done. It is impressive, to say the least.

I am writing to you to personally invite you to a meeting of all interested residents especially our community artists on:

This meeting will have a general purpose of providing a forum for the community at large to talk about the art components of the new center and a more specific purpose of inviting artists to put their names forward for consideration for one of the proposal commissions (there will be 12 altogether/ three for each art component) that would be part of the process. At the meeting, the four art components will be explained, with enough time to deal directly with the explanations and questions related to the commissioned artworks and commissioned artists.

Seeking Feedback for Preliminary Waterloo Engineering Plans

In 2010, Northeast Shores successfully lobbied the City of Cleveland to rebuild Waterloo based on the preliminary plan created in 2007. After being awarded nearly $4 million for the 2012 construction of the new Waterloo Streetscape, the City of Cleveland engaged Osborn Engineering and Knight & Stolar Landscape Architects to develop construction drawings for the impending improvements.

On November 29, the first public meeting for this process occurred. Feedback is being accepted on these draft plans until December 10th. At that point, curbcuts, bump-outs, and road width will be finalized. To review what was proposed, please see www.northeastshores.org/initiatives.php and look for "Waterloo Streetscape Engineering Plan". The plans can also be reviewed at the offices of Northeast Shores Located at 317 East 156th Street. Local children’s theater company, UpStage Players, based in the Waterloo Arts District of Cleveland, invites area 7- to 15-year-olds to audition for the troupe’s Spring 2011 musical, “Seussical: The Musical,” this December.

Auditions will be held on Sunday, December 5, 2010 for 12- to 15-year-olds and on Saturday, December 11, 2010 for 7- to 11-year-olds. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with auditions starting at 9:00 a.m. sharp on both days. No late-comers will be admitted. The event will end at 1:00 p.m. All children will be required to stay for the entire time and will be given a short snack break. Auditions will take place at the Slovenian Workmen’s Home, 15335 Waterloo. Callbacks will be scheduled by the artistic director. Those auditioning are asked to bring a 1- to 2-minute Broadway Musical song to perform, comfortable shoes, a current photo, a one-time $5 fee for photocopying/folders and a copy of his/ her birth certificate.

“Seussical: The Musical” will be performed on April 15, 16 and 17, 2011. Tech week begins on April 7th and ends on April 14th. All actors, actresses and tech crew members will be expected to be present for every tech week rehearsal. UpStage Players is a non-profit children’s theater company dedicated to the preservation and appreciation of theater through the education of children. Through the development of workshops and full-length productions, young people are afforded a positive social outlet and an opportunity for just good old fun!

Are you part of a Block Watch group? If not, why not? If you do, thank you!

Block Watches are about meeting your neighbors. If you know your neighbors, you will recognize strangers who come in to your neighborhood. Block Watches are about sharing information. You can learn about the various programs offered by Northeast Shores, the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and various other agencies. Block Watches are about being proactive not reactive to potential problems in your neighborhood. Block Watches are also about being the “Eyes and Ears” for the Police. Our “men in blue” can not be everywhere all the time. The Police need residents calling them reporting suspicious behavior. As Commander Drummond always says “if it looks suspicious, it probably is suspicious, so please make the call to the police”. Remember Zone Cars are deployed to our area based on the calls for service received from our area. So make those calls to the police. You are not bothering them. There are several block watch opportunities for you in North Collinwood:
If you live in the East 185th St. area, you can go to the East 185th St. Block Watch meetings. This group meets on the Second Tuesday of every month at 6:00 pm at the Lithuanian Hall, 877 East 185th St. (corner of Kewanee). The Chair person for this group is Denise Lorek.

If you live in the East 156th St. area, you can go to the East 156th St. Block Watch meetings. This group meets on the Fourth Wednesday of every month at 6:00 pm at the Arts Collinwood Community Center 397 East 156th St. The chair person for this group is Patricia Harrison.

The advantages of going to the East 185th or East 156th St. Block Watch meetings is that Commander Drummond or a 5th District representative are at all of the meetings. Councilman Polensek is always at the meetings as well. The Fifth District Police and Councilman Polensek are there to take any Quality of Life complaints you may have. They will investigate the complaints and take whatever action needs to be taken. The Fifth District always brings safety tips and crime statistics for our area. Councilman Polensek always has updates on what is going on in the neighborhood from Collinwood Rec Center updates to the Huron Road Hospital closing news. You are always encouraged to bring your questions and concerns for Councilman Polensek and Commander Drummond. They will try to answer you at the meeting but if that is not possible they will get your contact information and report back to you.

In addition to trying to improve the Quality of Life in the North Collinwood area, the Block Watches build a sense of camaraderie between the residents. We grieve the losses of our residents and we celebrate the additions to our families. We celebrate the anniversaries of our groups with parties. We also have seasonal parties! These parties are potluck, with the residents bringing all kinds of tasty dishes to the meetings to share.

The best part of Block Watching is finding out you are not alone in your neighborhood. You have many good neighbors and we are all here to help each other improve the Quality of Life in North Collinwood for all of us.

On Saturday October 16th 2010, students from The Brush High School Key Club, Villa Angela St. Joseph High School, Baldwin-Wallace College, community members and organizations came together to clean and screen Euclid Beach! This beach cleanup was particularly special because it marked our Adopt-a-Beach Team’s first year anniversary and with close 45 volunteers, it was also our largest beach cleanup to date! Not to mention, when all was said and done, we managed to collect over 155 pounds of trash and 54 pounds of recyclables! Among our most collected items, we found 617 cigar tips, 445 pieces of plastic and 285 plastic caps and lids to name only a few!

We hope you join the Euclid Beach Adopt-a-Beach Team one last time for the 2010 season on Saturday November 13th 2010 from 10am-12pm and if you cannot make it then, we will resume beach cleanups in March 2011! Remember, our Great Lakes constitute over 1/5 of the earth's fresh surface water so let’s take care of them while we still have the chance!

Upstage Players Auditions will be held on Sunday, December 5, for 12-15 year olds, Saturday, December 11, for 7-11 year olds. Registration starts at 8:30 am on both days.

Auditions start at 9 am sharp, will end at 1 pm and no late comers will be admitted. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes, bring a current photo, a copy of your birth certificate, and lots of energy. A one-time $5 folder fee will be collected at auditions to defray the cost of copying. Please prepare a 1-2 minute song from a Broadway musical. On Saturday October 9, Cleveland Restoration Society (CRS) working with Northeast Shores organized a tour and walk through of The Historic LaSalle Theatre. Twenty Five CRS members and neighbors walked through the building. It had been rumored by several clean out contractors that a trunk had been found. The Snoop confirmed the presence of the trunk. Can it be true that valuables have been found among the treasure of the LaSalle? On Wednesday November 17 from 6 PM to 8 PM you can find out. The public is invited to the opening of the trunk.

JP Kilroy of CRS commented, “it is a surprise to find something within The LaSalle Theatre building.” Among other items found was a door from a physician who once occupied a second floor office of the building as well as picture frames and a fitter shade which presumably adorned the LaSalle auditorium.

Denise Lorek, Community Organizer from Northeast Shores, stated, “we plan to have an evening filled with the simple pleasures of life: a bit of history of the area from Collinwood Historical Society, display of found objects at the LaSalle, popcorn and some Wurlitzer music piped in to give the air / feeling of what the LaSalle sounded like before the talkies. Residents who live close by are encouraged to walk to the LaSalle, as they did when the LaSalle opened.

The Marketing and Media Committee of Northeast Shores agreed that a contest should be conducted so the public can guess on what the contents of the trunk. On the cover of yesterday's Plain Dealer, the lead story shared that the cleveland.com website now includes an online survey where users can select their most important criteria and then various communities in Northeast Ohio are ranked to determine the user's best place to live.

Northeast Shores is elated to discover that North Collinwood was selected as only one of four City of Cleveland neighborhoods to be compared against our suburban peers. As we have said for years, North Collinwood competes strongly with our suburban competition and now we have an application that proves it.

Areas where North Collinwood competed strongly (top 10) against 99 other Northeast Ohio communities include:
1) Urbanity - A measure of the proximity between the distance between homes and retail businesses.
2) Most affordable housing
3) Rental Housing Available
4) Proximity to Lake Erie
5) Proximity to Downtown Cleveland
6) Racial Diversity

North Collinwood also scored well (but not top 10) in several other categories. We appreciate the opportunity to compete with our regional peers and look forward to improving areas where we are not meeting our aspirations so we can continue to be the absolute best location in Northeast Ohio to catch a sunset.

Construction Starts in Waterloo Village

Snoop the LaSalle Theater

Cleveland Restoration Society members are invited to a SNOOP! of the historic LaSalle Theatre on Saturday, October 9 at 10:00 am. The theater, a City of Cleveland Landmark, was closed in 1991. The property has been purchased by Northeast Shores Development Corporation, which has obtained funding to stabilize the building and make roof and limestone repairs.

The building, designed by architect Nicola Petti, was completed in 1927 as a speculative project by the International Building and Loan Company. It includes three storefronts and five residential apartments. The theater is an example of Neo-Classic architecture, with a temple front with pilasters and pediments. The original marquee remains intact, and the building still has a major presence in the East 185th Street commercial district.

East 156th Street has a Block Party!

On Wednesday, September 22, residents and merchants, young people and seniors from all over the East 156th St. neighborhood joined together for food, entertainment and fellowship.

Reverand Becham from B&M Barbecue fired up the grill around 4:00 so he could “get some smoke in the air” as he put it. As we waited for the neighbors to show up, Rev. Becham handed out some samples to those of us that were there to set up for the festivities. After finishing my samples, I knew I wouldn’t have to worry if the food was going to be good. It wasn’t just good, it was excellent!

It was a beautiful night for a cook out. The food prepared by Rev. Becham included ribs, wings, fried chicken, mac & cheese, and spaghetti. Bobby Qasim from Lakeshore Food Mart provided the pop. Dessert was from Cakes by Sweetwater. If anyone went home hungry, it sure wasn’t because there was not enough good food.

Chairperson Patricia Harrison welcomed everyone to the first of hopefully many more Block Parties. Mrs. Harrison encouraged everyone to also attend the meetings which are the 4th Wednesday of every month at the Arts Collinwood Community Center (397 E.156th St.) at 6:00pm. She shared with the group that Councilman Polensek and the 5th District Police Department are at every meeting to listen to the questions and concerns of residents. Councilman Polensek and the 5th District Police also provide updates at the meetings on what is going on in the neighborhood. Mrs. Harrison told everyone “that the meetings are a good opportunity to meet and talk to your neighbors”.

Councilman Polensek thanked everyone for coming to the cook out. He told the group that “a neighborhood is only as good as the people in it and people can make a difference in their neighborhood by participating in Block Watches”.

Camille Maxwell, Real Estate Development Director from Northeast Shores, explained to the residents that most of them live in what is called a “Model Block”. Camille shared with the residents the various opportunities that are available to them because they live in a Model Block. Some of the initiatives offer help with the painting of the exterior of your home, another one helps with the weatherization of your home, and the Model Block Small Grant Rebate plan helps residents with exterior repairs or to help address any exterior violations they may have. Liz Copic our “One Fun DJ” provided us with party music off of her Iphone. Yes Iphone! Technology is amazing these days. She had Rev. Becham dancing as he was cooking.

The Yo-Yo club was there dazzling the crowd with their yo-yo tricks. Merchants from Waterloo mingled with their customers. Old people were talking to young people and everyone was eating! A good time was had by all who attended.

The Cleveland APL is committed to ending this developing tragedy and has a new TNR program to assist caretakers of feral (unsocialized, outdoor) cats. If you are feeding a cat outside, we invite you to be part of the overpopulation solution and take advantage of APL services! Through the Animal Welfare Clinic, the APL offers the following services for feral cats and their caretakers:

Beach Cleanup This Weekend

It is time to clean Euclid Beach for September. Come on out this Saturday and help improve the appearance of the beach and lake water quality. Over 100 different volunteers have joined in this initiative. How about you too?

On Saturday August 21st, volunteers from Fifth Third Bank, Baldwin-Wallace College, John Carroll University, The Friends of Euclid Creek, The Cleveland Institute of Art and The City of South Euclid came together to clean and screen Euclid Beach Park! For our August cleanup, we collected close to 78 pounds of trash including 212 cigar tips, 179 plastic bottles, 149 caps/lids and much more!

Tonight is the September edition of Walk All Over Waterloo, which is a monthly merchant-driven evening to enjoy a little something extra or special in our Waterloo Arts and Entertainment District.

Back to School at Lakeshore Beach

On Thursday, August 19, the management of Lakeshore Beach Apartments, Northeast Shores Development Corporation and Shoes and Clothes for Kids teamed up for the first “Back to School night”. This event was held in the new Community Center located in the front of the apartment complex. Over 200 parents and children gathered for hot dogs and book bags. Shoes and Clothes for Kids donated 90 book bags to this event. Northeast Shores and Lakeshore Beach Apartments donated school supplies and food.

Myra Freeman-Pereria and her staff cooked over 200 hotdogs to feed the children and their parents before we started the book bag give away. Just to make it more fun we put the children’s names in a briefcase and pulled them out one by one. Myra said “The joy on the faces of the children here when receiving their book bags was just priceless. I believe very passionately in no child left behind, and with the help of Northeast Shores and Shoes and Clothes for Kids I think we helped make a great start to the new school year”. There were lots of smiles and happy faces. We even gave some pencils and paper to the moms who are returning back to school to learn critical job skills.

This is just the first part of making sure these children excel in school this year. The management of Lakeshore Beach is trying to start a mentoring/tutoring program to help the children with their homework. Moritz Metal and Wood installed the Tower which is a collaboration of artist Christopher Diehl, and Moritz Wood & Metal / fabricator and artist Mike Moritz.

The placemaking and public art armature Tower was conceived as part of the Waterloo Streetscape Plan working with the Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative of NOACA. The initiative was spearheaded collectively through the efforts of the community with Northeast Shores Development. Continued streetscape improvements are planned for the district. Construction is expected to commence in 2012 for the total plan which included final programming of the area surrounding the Tower. This planning phase will be conducted together with Osborn Engineering, Knight & Stolar, Inc., Planning Consultants & Landscape Architects and The City of Cleveland Department of Construction and Engineering.

The Tower was done in partnership with The City of Cleveland with support from Councilman Michael D. Polensek, Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and the community through the efforts of Arts Collinwood and Northeast Shores.

Chris Diehl from dielio inc artist provided some history regarding the philosophy behind the creation of the Tower concept. “The large area of asphalt intersection at E. 156th and Waterloo streets was created in order to turn street trolleys around. The trolleys served this vibrant working class neighborhood and they, in turn, served the Collinwood rail yards. Visitors also poured onto Waterloo in order to spend the day at the Euclid Beach Park Amusement park just north off of Lake Shore Blvd. After the trolley service ended, the amusement park closed and I-90 cut the Waterloo neighborhood off from the rail yards. This intersection became a large and ungainly place for cars and trucks to pass through and a hazard for the wary pedestrian.”

“The Waterloo placemaking Tower stakes a flag, of sorts, into reclaiming that area as a new civic heart for this reawakening district now reprogrammed for the visual and entertainment arts. The tower will act as the centerpiece of the new pedestrian-friendly plaza next to Arts Collinwood Gallery and the Café at Arts Collinwood. As such, the raw stainless steel structure will become a site for temporary public art installations and live music performance. Like the neighborhood around it, it becomes the container to house and display the incredible talent and gifts of the Waterloo community.

Sarah Gyorki Executive Director at Arts Collinwood stated, “The Waterloo Public Art Selection Committee has been established to review artist submittals that will be solicited following the course of each season throughout the year. Congratulations to Mike Moritz and to Chris Diehl for the work that they have done. Now that the tower's in place, Robin Van Lear will collaborate with another artist after a site visit. As soon as we have the proposal from them, we'll share it with the full committee. The merchants on Waterloo are planning a Walk All Over Waterloo event for the tower unveiling on Sept 17. We hope to have an installation in place and some entertainment for that evening -- live music, food and drink, specials at various venues on the street, including the lighting of the new sign at Blue Arrow Records and Books.”

Fabricator / Artist Mike Moritz appreciated the congratulations offered for the initiative, but tempered his comment with the team effort that went into the project. “Thanks to everyone involved with the Tower project. I still have a few finishing touches on the structure. I will also be creating the specifications regarding future installations of public art on the Tower. The document will then be turned over to the Tower Public Art Committee as an addendum to the request for proposal submittals to artists. The coolest thing about this endeavor is that it stands alone as a placemaking structure, but the evolution of possibilities is endless regarding art installations within the context of the Tower.”

Vince Reddy from Cleveland Public Art commented that: “The tower looks great. I think the Tower being placed there is a triumph in the aesthetically conservative atmosphere of Cleveland.”

Ike is only 13 years old, and is already a force to be reckoned with at Yo-Yo Contests.....wish him the best of luck at Worlds this weekend! Ike has also recently placed 4th. in his region, and is heading to Nationals in October!"
