Citizen Police Academy Starting Soon!

Citizen Police Academy will be starting in April at the Grovewood Salvation Army.

Call 623-5080 to sign up. The class is seven weeks and free to Cleveland residents.

Safety Summit Scheduled!

The Commander of the Cleveland Police Sixth District, Wayne Drummond, will hold a Safety Summit on Thursday, March 27 from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Memorial-Nottingham Library (17109 Lakeshore Boulevard).

This event is open to the public. We hope you will be able to a attend and consider bringing a neighbor or friend.

The Commander will have representatives from his staff at this Safety Summit. Residents are encouraged to ask questions of the officers as well as point out trouble spots in the area.

Don’t just complain about safety! Be part of the solution. Attend!

Congrats to VASJ Boy's Basketball Team

Northeast Shores congratulates the VASJ Boy's Basketball Team on a tremendous season. In case you missed it, the Vikings squad went all the way to the state semi-finals. Their skill on the court clearly showed that they were one of the top teams in the state. Thanks again for an amazing season!

Safety Patrols Started

Northeast Shores has set aside a small budget to hire private security patrolling for our community. The Safety Steering Committee has been taking into consideration special events that are taking place in North Shores Collinwood and scheduling Tenable Security for patrol duty. Unfortunately, we can only arrange 4-hour patrols on a very limited basis.

The committee welcomes suggested dates for patrols. There are three different district patrols that are possible around:
East 185th
Waterloo Rd.
Lake Shore Blvd.

For instance, on Tuesday, March 4, St. Jerome's Church was hosting the Collinwood Fire Memorial event. Tenable patrolled the area and Lake Shore Blvd. between 6:00-10:00 pm. The officer was asked to watch the parking lot and the surrounding streets. Making visitors feel safe is part of our mission as well as keeping residents safe.

For a small fee, you can have the Tenable officer patrol your business or home on the evenings they are working the area.

Currently, Tenable is scheduled to patrol on:
Saturday, May 10
Saturday, June 14 both in the Waterloo area since the Second Stage performers are having an event.

Women's Art Opening Rescheduled!

The March snow storm that cancelled the women's art and music show Sat. April 12 at Arabica (818 East 156 Street) will be rescheduled for the second Saturday in April (April 12th). The art show opening will be from 5-7 pm and the Music and Poetry will start with an open mic at 7pm.

Consider joining the new Outreach Committee!

Several members have expressed interest in us restarting the Outreach Committee. If you share that interest, please consider joining us for a meeting this week.

Board member, Larry McFadden, has volunteered to be the Community Outreach Committee chairperson.

The first meeting is Wednesday, March 12 from 6:00-7:00 pm at the Northeast Shores offices (317 East 156th Street).

The main focus of the committee is to engage residents in the programs and activities of Northeast Shores. This engagement can be accomplished through fun activities such as participating at events including:
Waterloo Arts Festival
Euclid Beach Park Now events
Northeast Shores Awards Dinner

Waterloo Launches Branding Campaign

Last week, the Waterloo Arts and Entertainment District launched its new marketing campaign. A new logo was unveiled for the district that will be used in print media and neighborhood signage.

Also, a marketing campaign was started in the Free Times that informs the region about happenings in the district. The advertisements are bright, colorful, creative and a bit witty. Ads can be seen in each week's Free Times promoting events, artist housing, and new businesses.

We want to thank Neighborhood Progress Inc and an anonymous donor for providing the funding necessary to launch this new initiative.

Cafe Marika Has New Menu

Have you been to Cafe Marika lately? A LOT has changed in the last month or two at this eatery located at 15601 Waterloo Road.

I think the manager of the cafe summed up the changes best with the following information:

Lakeview School Fire Events for March 4, 2008

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Lakeview School Fire, several events are planned throughout the day and evening of March 4, 2008.

Please join us for the following activities that will all occur on March 4, 2008:

8:30 am - Memorial School (410 East 156th Street) - Anniversary commemorated with flags in the Memorial School garden

9:30 am - Bells of St. Jerome Church will toll once for each of the lives lost

10:30 am - CSX Railyard whistle will blow

Noon - Lakeview Cemetery (12316 Euclid Avenue) - Service at the mass gravesite, including the laying of wreaths and the playing of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes by Tom Garfield. Presenters will also talk about the history and legacy of the fire.

7:00 p.m. - St. Jerome Church (15000 Lakeshore Boulevard) - Interfaith memorial service and candle ceremony followed by a public reception
