Northeast Shores sponsors Purple Light Nights

Northeast Shores has joined the Domestic Violence Center (DVC) in recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Please join the Domestic Violence Center (DVC) and Northeast Shores as we light up the neighborhood during the month of October to raise awareness of the critical issue of domestic violence.

DVC is sponsoring Purple Light Nights™, a campaign designed to shine a light on a problem that is often associated with silence and shame. Domestic violence extends far beyond physical abuse. It is a growing problem that can be battled through awareness. Help us ensure the safety of our community’s women, children, and teens during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Individuals can shine a purple light in their window or on the front porch of their home throughout October – an easy, low-cost way to start the conversation about domestic violence prevention. Northeast Shores has a limited number of purple light bulbs to distribute to the neighborhood. Please contact Denise Lorek at dlorek@northeastshores.org if you would like to participate. Purple Light Bulbs are also available for sale at all Heinen's Grocery Stores throughout the month of October.

Purple Light Nights™ was first launched in King County, Washington in October 2007 by the Covington Domestic Violence Task Force. Residents, Local businesses, and public institutions shined a purple light in their window or on their porch from October 1st - 31st, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The color purple is specifically used because it has long been recognized as the international color symbolic of domestic violence.

For questions, more info, or to obtain bulk light bulbs, contact: Lizzie Ackerman @ eackerman@dvccleveland.org or 216-688-7229.

Also, check out www.domesticviolencecenter.org for more county-wide Purple Light Nights events throughout October.
