Cleveland neighborhood showcases its many tastes

Lots of Lake County folks trace their roots to Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood, especially the streets around East 185th Street. To this day, its eateries retain a delicious ethnicity among their food offerings.

Many of them will participate in the March 4 Taste of the Neighborhood event being staged by the Northeast Shores Development Corp. as part of its 6 to 9 p.m. Awards Dinner. It's in the upstairs ballroom of the Lithuanian Hall, 877 E. 185th St.

Check out Waterloo 7 this weekend

Waterloo 7 Studio & Gallery (located at 16006 Waterloo, across from the Beachland Ballroom) is hosting Cleveland Area Artists for an adventure in art.

The show titled "Expressions of Art" is a conglomeration of mediums, textures, styles and colors that you must see. There will be art to fit everyone's personality and budget.

he event is scheduled for this Saturday, February 28th from 6pm-1am and will feature live music from artist Xela and others.

The event will be on March 4th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Lithuanian Hall (877 E. 185th Street) in the grand ballroom upstairs. We will be honoring local residents, block watches and businesses for their accomplishments towards making this a better community to live in.

The theme of the dinner will be "A Taste of the Neighborhood". There will be tastes from many local restaurants and eateries. From ribs/wings to mac and cheese, sausage to spicy sesame noodles, soup to pizza. We have all kinds of tastes of the area. There will be a cash bar with our very own Councilman, Mike Polensek as the guest bartender.

A 50/50 raffle and chinese auction will round out the evening.

Help Save St. Jerome's

As you may have heard, the Catholic Diocese is strongly considering closing St. Jerome's Church on Lakeshore Boulevard.

Closing St. Jerome's would have a devastating impact on the entire North Shores Collinwood neighborhood. We can not allow this essential neighborhood institution to close.

Below is a draft letter to the Bishop imploring him to reconsider the closure of St. Jerome's. Please cut and paste the text below into your word processing program, sign the letter and mail to the Bishop. Feel free to revise the letter to reflect your own personal opinion of the closing. Also, don't forget to change the bottom of the letter to reflect your name and address.

After signing the letter, please mail directly to the Bishop. If you do not have a stamp, feel free to drop off your signed letter at Northeast Shores and we will send it for you.

Re: Collinwood Cluster-St. Jeromes Church

Dear Bishop Lennon:

As a resident of the North Collinwood area, I would like you to know that I oppose the closure of St. Jeromes Church. The closure of this church will have a devastating impact on my neighborhood.

We don’t need another vacant empty building in our neighborhood. To think that this building could fall in to the hands of vandals is sad. If it is stripped of its copper and full of graffiti, it will really make our neighborhood look like a depressed area.

St. Jeromes church is part of the history of this community. How can you take that away from us? I ask you to please reconsider the closing of St. Jeromes. There is not another Catholic church north of St. Clair from E. 72nd St. to E.200th St. The two churches you are considering keeping open (St. Mary’s and Holy Redeemer) are only 1 block away from each other.

St. Jeromes has been a major community asset for decades. St. Jeromes is on a major bus line, while no other church in this area is. It is also very convenient for the elderly who walk to church. St. Jeromes has opened its doors to many neighborhood organizations like AA, NA and several Block Clubs.

By closing St. Jeromes Church, you are turning your back on the people, families and community who have supported that church through the years. If you close St. Jeromes School, you will be putting people out of work. Not only that but where will all of those children go to school? You will be forcing people to move out of this area to find a quality school for their children to go.

Bishop Lennon, not only will you be leaving us with a vacant and empty building you will be forcing people to move. Why would you do that to our community?

Are We Really Listening?

I recently came across the following passage. It made me think about how Northeast Shores interacts with the community. Take a read and let is sink in:
The next time you're in conversation with someone think about this question for a second. Many times we're simply thinking of what we're going to say next, rather than actually listening to the person with a clear mind.

If you're guilty (as I sometimes am) of this at times there's some really bad news. The other person knows this as well. It's written all over our faces.

It's in the very words that we use to follow up with in our discussion with that person. The good news is that by making ourselves aware of the fact that we're not truly listening we can begin at that very moment correcting the problem. Make yourself aware of the importance of listening and you'll reap many rewards. It's one of life's most awesome facts that people are drawn to those who are good listeners.

Upon reading the biography's of many leaders one thing is clear. Each in their own way are magnificent listeners.

Waterloo highlighted on ONN

The Ohio News Network (ONN) recently visited our neighborhood and filmed a piece about the progress on Waterloo Road. It is a strong reflection of our collective efforts to improve the street.
