Celebrate the New Year at the Beachland

Posted as requested by Cindy Barber, owner of the Beachland Ballroom:

"The problem with New Year's Eve is that the pressure is on to have THE BEST NIGHT OF ALL TIME every single year. Often you are disappointed right? Or you just hide and wait for it to be over.

The good news is that this year the Beachland has created something really special because we're excited about ringing in a year that means a new chance, with a new president. So we asked the legendary Jason and the Scorchers from Nashville to make a special trip up north to ring in 2009 at the Beachland Ballroom, with Cleveland's own crazy toastmasters the Whiskey Daredevils kicking things off.

And here's the testimonial: According to head Daredevil Greg Miller, "Jason and the Scorchers is one of the ten best American bands of all time. These are the guys that created the "cowpunk" playbook, and are cited as influences by every cool band you can think of. Without Jason and the Scorcers, there is no Cowslingers/Whiskey Daredevils. I still listen to the "Fervor" and "Still Standing" records every few weeks."

Here's the back story: the original Jason & The Scorchers played a reunion in September at the Americana Music Association awards ceremony where they received a Lifetime Achievement Award. That two-song performance marked the first time in over a decade the original line-up shared the stage. Anchored by singer Jason Ringenberg and guitarist Warner Hodges, the band included Perry Baggs on drums and Jeff Johnson on bass, but Baggs had left the drum throne due to his fight with diabetes, which keeps him on dialysis on a weekly basis. Johnson left the band in 1997, moved out to the west coast and the movie business.

After the awards ceremony an altered version of the Scorchers, with former Clevelander Al Collins on bass and Fenner Castner on drums, plus Baggs on harmony vocals and percussion out front with Ringenberg and Hodges, took the stage at another venue and rocked for 2 hours leaving hundreds, including me, completely knocked out by the energy on stage, especially the interplay between Hodges great guitar work and Ringenberg's just pure twirling joy.

I called Ringenberg, who has been a regular solo performer at the Beachland (even performing one year at the E. 185th Street Festival), to ask about a New Year's Eve show. Jason had not planned on touring with a revised Scorchers until sometime in the spring, but rounded up the crew, which will include Al Collins' wife, Stacie as a featured guest, to play this special Beachland show, because, like many performers, the club is one of his favorite spots to play. The Beachland has invited all Scorchers fans to convene in Cleveland to usher in 2009. And a few folks are coming in from as far away as Oregon, Texas and New York to see this.

The plan is to kick off an hour set of Whiskey Daredevils at 9:30 in our balloon-filled, disco-ball-lite ballroom, where there will plenty of tables and chairs. Scorchers will go on at 11 PM with a midnight break to countdown the end of 2008, toasts, noise and kisses all around, and then they'll keep going until 12:30 or 1 PM depending on how the energy feels. Then you can make your way to our annual post show buffet breakfast if you want.

Tickets are set at $25 each and include noisemakers and champagne at midnight, but because you know me, live nearby, or I just think you should be there.... I am offering you a special TWO FER ONE PRICE for you and any friends you think would appreciate this special happening. You can buy tickets online at the Beachland website and enter the access code CHEAPDATE when you make your purchase for the 2 fer one deal or, if you want, you can also buy them direct from the Beachland at this price by mentioning the promo when you call 216-383-1124 in the next couple days.

Help us bring in a new year, with friendship and fun.

Cindy B."

Collinwood is a "plum fun time"

The Plain Dealer Friday Magazine highlighted that Collinwood (among other places) is where you should take returning Clevelanders to show them a great time.

The exact quote was:
"Collinwood: This old Cleveland neighborhood was written off as a dead zone when rock club par excellence the Beachland Ballroom & Tavern - 15711 Waterloo Road, Cleveland - opened in 2000. No more. Waterloo is swimming in shops, galleries, and hangouts: Shoparooni (retro toys and clothes), Music Saves (indie rock discs), Studio 7 & Gallery (steel sculptures galore), Low Life Gallery (art with a rock 'n' roll attitude) and, of course, This Way Out (a vintage shop located under the Beachland)."

Isn't that great?!? Bring out your friends and family and check US out.

Stay Safe this Holiday Season

The Safety Committee of Northeast Shores wanted to share some safety tips for you and your family this holiday season.

As you visit your local mall or (better yet) SHOP THE NEIGHBORHOOD, stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Here are some tips to ensure a positive December (and beyond):
• Try not to go shopping alone, use the buddy system.
• Park in a well lit area.
• Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows.
• Put packages in the trunk of your car if you are going to multiple stores.
• Have your keys in your hand as you approach your car.
• Leave your purse at home if you can. Put your money and ID in a front pocket, if possible.
• Use your debit/credit card to avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you.
• Be Careful at ATM machines use one in a secure location such as inside a mall or store.
• When you use an ATM machine, shield your PIN number from the view of others.
• Take your purchase or ATM receipts with you, rather than putting them into the trash.
• Make sure your doors are locked when you leave, even if you are just leaving for a minute or you are outside putting up those Holiday Decorations.
• After wrapping your presents put them somewhere for safe keeping, don’t leave them visible from a window or door.
• If you purchase an artificial tree, look for the label "Fire Resistant."
• Inspect the wiring on your holiday light displays to make sure it is not frayed or damaged.

Last but not least Please Shop the Neighborhood. The local merchants and businesses need your support.

Please have a safe and happy Holiday Season!

Low Life opens Holiday Show

The newest gallery on Waterloo, Low Life, just opened their holiday show, "Dad screwed up Christmas again!". Check it out at 16001 Waterloo Road and buy some art for your drunk Uncle Charlie.

Here is the gallery exhibit in Low Life's own words:

The holidays aren’t always the happiest time of year!

Nestled within a seemingly festive family ritual burrows the buckle of an anxious stomach or the pop of frustrated knuckles. Therefore, in both holiday merriment and perplexity, Low Life Gallery is kicking off the holiday season with a collection of artists who have put a magnifying glass to the otherwise obscure holiday sentiment.

In the name of our profound love/hate relationship with the season, observe an endearingly twisted group show that bears a warped rendition of the classic American holiday.

Featured artists include but are not limited to:
Amanda Davidson
Chris Kulscar
Ed Boyle
Hannah Verbeuren
Gabriel Van Horn
K. Stewart
Kerry Lange
MalPractice U.J.
Mik Mackey

Low Life Gallery
16001 Waterloo Road
Cleveland, OH 44110

Opening Reception
Friday, November 28th, 2008
7:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Hannah Verbeuren and Kerry Lange recently curated “Crying Polyester Peckers” their first show in a series of shows that include multiple artists attacking a common theme from their own idiosyncratic perspective.

Kerry and Hannah have started a different approach to independent art shows by setting up shows that keep their work and subject matter fresh and contemporary. “We want to keep ourselves and our audience interested or inspired” says Hannah, “by choosing one topic, then creating the art around that theme, we initiate a challenge for ourselves and the artists we chose to work with. For us, this formula is more stimulating than simply compiling a regurgitation of our past work.”

"Crying Polyester Peckers" opened to an encouraging crowd of 100 plus art lovers/Clevelanders and took sightseers on a journey into the unconventional world of John Waters.

Message from Kollander World Travel

Kollander World Travel asked us to post this on their behalf. Take a read about the future of Kollander Travel:

It is my pleasure to officially inform you that as of 1DEC 2008 – Kollander World Travel will be leaving the AAA-East Central organization after 5 years of cooperation with AAA. We have been given the opportunity to continue our focus on international travel while continuing to serve the travel needs of the local community. We will convert the ongoing operation and re-emerge as a new Ohio company: Kollander World Travel. We will be keeping the same location at the 971 Building on E.185th Street, our long standing phone numbers, web site address, and most importantly, all the existing employees.

International cooperation with one of our long time vendor partners became a logical path to growth for the KWT staff. This affiliation allows us to better leverage our nationally recognized expertise in worldwide travel. This opportunity to separate was presented by AAA East Central management early this summer. They had abandoned plans to expand the Kollander office into an AAA branch office on E. 185th after the acquisition by AAA-East Central of Pittsburgh about 3 years ago.

Kollander World Travel will continue to be actively engaged in marketing and selling leisure and corporate travel to the area community and will increase our efforts in the custom group tour and cruise products for which we are well known. We are determined to continue our relationships with our key local partners and organizations as we go forward.

This transition will involve the transfer of the ongoing operation of Kollander World Travel during the early part of December. Every effort is being made to maintain client service and complete customer satisfaction over the course of the change. We continue to value our relationship with the AAA organization and the many AAA members we have been proud to serve over these years and into the future.

We look forward to working closely with the local community and hope to be more involved in the renaissance of the North East Shores.

Thank You and Best Regards,
Michael J. Benz

Holly Golightly Benefit is a Hit

Holly GoLightly had her garden party concert at the Beachland Ballroom last Friday night November 14th to benefit the North Shores Community Gardens Project.

For $20.00 you got to meet Holly before the concert, get her autograph and then hear her concert at the Beachland Ballroom. Part of that $20.00 was donated to the North Shores Community Garden project, which is being managed by Northeast Shores Development Corporation.

The Community Garden Project is for the development of community gardens in empty lots where condemned homes are being demolished by the city of Cleveland and reclaimed.

If you have a chance, check out Holly’s new album entitled “Dirt Don’t Hurt”. It’s a mixture of electric country blues, folk and silky rock & roll.

If you were not able to attend last Friday night's concert and would like to donate to support the creation of a community garden, we will greatly appreciate your donations. You can call the Beachland Ballroom at 216-383-1124 or Northeast Shores Development Corporation at 216-481-7660 to donate. The concert was presented as part of the Green City on a Blue Lake initiative.

The photo is of Cindy Barber, Holly Golightly, Katherine Isenhart, and Denise Lorek making gardening plans.

The Facade is falling at the LaSalle

The Façade is falling at the LaSalle

The barricades and “do not cross this line” installation has been placed at the streetscape of the LaSalle Theatre located at 819-827 East 185th Street.

The barricades were installed by the City of Cleveland to protect the health and safety of residents and passersby.

The current property owners are Crock Real Estate, which is the Holding Company for ParkView Federal Savings. ParkView is in Cleveland Housing Court over the condition of the LaSalle’s façade. They are awaiting the findings of an engineer to determine the cause of the falling sandstone. The engineer will very likely make short term and long term recommendations regarding the methodology of the repair. Recommendations do not necessitate action though.

If you are concerned about the condition of the building, please call Anne Johnson at ParkView. Tell her you want the LaSalle Theater repaired now! Her number is (440) 248-7171.

For further information or to air concerns, call our office and ask for John Boksansky at 216 481-7660 or jboksansky@northeastshores.org

Come out and support our community gardens

HOLLY GOLIGHTLY GARDEN PARTY TO BENEFIT THE NORTH SHORES COMMUNITY GARDENS PROJECT

Friday, November 14, 7:30 pm

Please join British chanteuse Holly Golightly for a concert to benefit the North Shores Community Gardens project, the development of community gardens in empty lots where condemned homes are being demolished by the city of the Cleveland and reclaimed. The project is to be managed by Northeast Shores Development Corporation, the local development corporation in the Beachland neighborhood. Tickets for the event are $20 per person and include a pre-show meet and greet with Holly Golightly, plus the live performance of the acclaimed songstress, who was famously featured on the White Stripes track "It's True That We Love One Another" from the Stripes Elephant release.

Her new album Dirt Don't Hurt is a mixture of electric country blues, folk and silky rock & roll. It brings to mind evenings on a dusty front porch with your faithful hound, cracked hearts and foot stomping good times.
For tickets, please call the Beachland at 216-383-1124. If you are not able to attend but would like to support the creation of a community garden in the North Shores community, we will gratefully accept your $20 donation. Presented as part of the Green City on a Blue Lake initiative.

Values of Northeast Shores

During a conference in Youngstown this past Friday (http://www.regionallearningnetwork.org/), I had the opportunity to learn more about effectively telling the story of Northeast Shores and our role in improving the North Shores Collinwood neighborhood.

At the core of the presentation of Dick Brooks from Action Media (http://www.actionmedia.org/) was that we need to share our stories based on shared values.

So, here is what I came up with. Please share with me your thoughts on other core values missing or if you think this is representative of Northeast Shores and North Shores Collinwood.

The mission of Northeast Shores is to create a better North Shores Collinwood to live, work and visit. But, what is our core goal? I believe our core goal is making North Shores Collinwood competitive.

What exactly is Northeast Shores trying to do? Our vision of a successful community is one where investment occurs as we witness homes being improved and businesses are open and thriving. Further, our residents are safe, educated and our children are happy. Further, our parks are active pleasant places which are known for being busy.

So, what are our underlying values? We believe that our community's core values are equality, stability, freedom of choice, and that the community is a energizing/vibrant/dynamic area.

What do you think? Tell us what neighborhood and/or Northeast Shores success looks like to you. In your opinion, what are the core values of this community?

Thanks,
Brian A. Friedman
Executive Director

Waterloo Merchant on Wife Swap!

Tune in to ABC this Friday, November 7th, at 8:00 pm to check out Shoparooni owners Marlee and Steve Brown on Wife Swap!

Steve Brown is a world-renowned yo-yo artist and his exploits are all over YouTube, but this is one of the first time you can check out his skills during prime-time.

Having seen Wife Swap several times and knowing the Browns, I can tell you that Friday should make for a very interesting hour of reality television.

If you want to check out the episode in the neighborhood, there will be a viewing party at the Boardwalk, 16011 Waterloo! Pop in to Shoparooni before the show at 7:00 to check out the Plushform custom toy show.

The Plain Dealer also covered the Browns on Wife Swap. This is what they said:

'Wife Swap' sends Marlee Brown of Cleveland Heights off to Idaho
Sunday, November 02, 2008

The Brown household in Cleveland Heights runs on free-spirited energy.

Dad Steve is a wizard with a yo-yo and loves his velvet Elvis that hangs over the couch. Mom Marlee is a graphic designer who pads around the house in owl slippers. Because they are parents who primarily work from home, there isn't a lot of clock watching.

The Neighbor family in Idaho believes in rigid schedules, eat-off-the-floor cleanliness and being tops in every endeavor.

What happens when a member of the Neighbor clan comes to live with the Browns? Find out on "Wife Swap," at 8 p.m. Friday on WEWS Channel 5.

On the ABC reality show, wives from dissimilar families swap homes for two weeks. (Get your mind out of the gutter; the wives sleep in guest rooms.)

During the first week, the wife tries to fit into her new family's routines. For the second week, each mom establishes new rules for her substitute family.

"Wife Swap" producers contacted the Browns because the show was looking for a family with a performer. Steve, a yo-yo master, was recommended by the man who runs an international yo-yo competition. Although Steve, 32, and Marlee, 29, had never watched "Wife Swap," they signed up.

"It was one of those, 'Why not?' moments," said Marlee, a native of South Euclid.

The Browns own Shoparooni, a gift boutique in Cleveland's North Collinwood neighborhood. Their family includes Zane Rouse, 12, and 3-year-old Maverick. Toddler Trixie was not included in the episode, which was shot in the spring.

Jessica Neighbor, 36, the spit-and-polish mom, clearly felt that the Brown house and its occupants weren't clean or organized enough. How did Steve react?

"With admirable restraint and the patience of Job," he said. "She was very scrutinizing."

Marlee Brown stayed at the Neighbor home with dad Alan, 48, daughter Kassidy, 11, and son Kaden, 9. Marlee had to manage the kids' schedule of activities, sports and chores. She realized both families want their children to be successful but approach that goal differently.

While they didn't agree with the Neighbors' approach to child-rearing, going on "Wife Swap" made their family stronger by letting them see it through outsiders' eyes. Steve said he and his stepson, Zane, became closer as they shared duties in Marlee's absence.

Marlee would do it all over again.

"It was a really cool life experience," she said.

Waterloo Named One Of America’s Best Secret Neighborhoods!

Waterloo Arts District, Cleveland, OH, October 24, 2008 – The Waterloo Arts District was recently named one of “America’s Best Secret Neighborhoods” by Travel & Leisure Magazine, ranking alongside neighborhoods in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Miami, among others.

The article reads:

Collinwood, Cleveland, Ohio

Then: Immigrants from Croatia and Slovenia came here in the 1880’s to work in the railroad yards of this shoreside neighborhood in the far northeast corner of the city.

Now: A neighborhood development group started to stimulate growth in 2004 by buying buildings and leasing them at low cost to boho businesses such as Music Saves, an indie-rock record store selling original vinyl as well as tickets to rock shows at the next-door Beachland Ballroom.

Don’t Miss: Slovenian smoked sausage at Raddell’s Sausage Shop, supplying Clevelanders with bona fide Eastern European meats since 1979.

Arabica 2.0 coming soon!

On a very sad Friday in September, the Arabica on East 185th Street served its last latte. Quoting increasing costs and rough sales in a troubled regional economy, the owner of Arabica, John Bausone, decided he could not renew his lease and decided to close the business. Northeast Shores has received countless phone calls from concerned residents about losing their corner coffee shop.

Not to fear! The Arabica on East 185th Street will reopen soon. We learned last night that corporate Arabica has issued a new franchise for that location. The business owner's name is Jim.

We understand Arabica will reopen by December 1, 2008. Until then, weep as you sip your Folger's.

Northeast Shores sponsors Purple Light Nights

Northeast Shores has joined the Domestic Violence Center (DVC) in recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Please join the Domestic Violence Center (DVC) and Northeast Shores as we light up the neighborhood during the month of October to raise awareness of the critical issue of domestic violence.

DVC is sponsoring Purple Light Nights™, a campaign designed to shine a light on a problem that is often associated with silence and shame. Domestic violence extends far beyond physical abuse. It is a growing problem that can be battled through awareness. Help us ensure the safety of our community’s women, children, and teens during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Individuals can shine a purple light in their window or on the front porch of their home throughout October – an easy, low-cost way to start the conversation about domestic violence prevention. Northeast Shores has a limited number of purple light bulbs to distribute to the neighborhood. Please contact Denise Lorek at dlorek@northeastshores.org if you would like to participate. Purple Light Bulbs are also available for sale at all Heinen's Grocery Stores throughout the month of October.

Purple Light Nights™ was first launched in King County, Washington in October 2007 by the Covington Domestic Violence Task Force. Residents, Local businesses, and public institutions shined a purple light in their window or on their porch from October 1st - 31st, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The color purple is specifically used because it has long been recognized as the international color symbolic of domestic violence.

For questions, more info, or to obtain bulk light bulbs, contact: Lizzie Ackerman @ eackerman@dvccleveland.org or 216-688-7229.

Also, check out www.domesticviolencecenter.org for more county-wide Purple Light Nights events throughout October.

Arts Collinwood Open House this Saturday!

Did you miss "Assemblage"? If you did, shame on you since you were not one of the first people to see the amazing new community center at the Arts Collinwood Building. Assemblage was one heck of shindig and YOU missed it! Shame, shame, shame!

We can forgive you! We understand! It was a busy weekend with the whole Euclid Beach event also occurring in the neighborhood. But, we expect you to make amends!

Come this Saturday, October 4th to the FREE open house of the new community center located at the corner of Waterloo Road and East 156th Street. It's free and open to all ages, with great activities, entertainment, free food!!!

The event is so big! It has its own press release:

Arts Collinwood will open its new arts center to the community with a free public open house from 4-6pm on October 4, 2008. Art exhibits, Capoeira demonstrations and samples of programs to be offered in the center this fall will provide a full plate of entertainment, along with activities for families and children and free refreshments. It is free to all ages. Anyone interested in finding out more about Arts Collinwood and its offerings should drop in.

This celebration marks the culmination of a 4-year renovation process. “We’ve worked for many years to reach this point,”: says Steve Manka, Chair of the Arts Collinwood Board. “This is the final phase of a major effort to restore a blighted building to a center of art in the community. We’re very proud of what our members and volunteers have done in helping to make this a reality.”

Thousands of volunteer hours and considerable contributions from the community and donors have furthered a project that began with a partially abandoned building and now houses a multi-use arts center. The first space opened was the Arts Collinwood Gallery, followed by a café and studios. The community arts center is the final piece of a long-range plan that has made this historic building an anchor of the emerging Waterloo arts district.

Arts Collinwood acknowledges support from Funders including the Thomas White Foundation, the Abington Foundation, the Krieger Foundation, the Northeast Shores Development Corporation’s Capital Improvements Grant and the George Gund Foundation for support that has helped to make this project possible.

See you Saturday on Waterloo!

Remembering Euclid Beach draws record crowd!

We want to thank the massive crowd that gathered this past Sunday (September 28) to remember the sights and sounds of Euclid Beach Amusement Park.

Also, visitors caught the first glimpse of our plans to return the Euclid Beach Carrousel to the existing State Park. (We want to thank City Architecture for donating their services in creating the beautiful rendering.)

Remembering Euclid Beach this Sunday!

It's that time of year again -- The Fourth Annual Remembering the Sights & Sounds of Euclid Beach Park event will be this Sunday September 28th 2008 1 pm - 5 pm

We've had 1200 to 1500 of our fellow "Euclid Beach Nuts" come "back to the Beach" each year. 39 years later, it's amazing how magical "Euclid Beach" still is.

And yes, Sunday September 28th 2008 is 39 years to the day that Euclid Beach Park closed forever, on Sunday September 28th 1969. We'll remember . . .

Great fun too, as we'll have both the Thriller Car® & the Rocket Ship Car® giving free rides (under the Arch and around again!)

And Laughing Sal's coming too! (It'll be the first time she's been back to Euclid Beach since the Park closed.)

VASJ is NOT Moving

Recently, we have heard several rumours that VASJ High School is moving. There is no truth to this rumour.

For further evidence of the inaccuracy of this rumour, please read the following press release from VASJ High School:

"Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School is not for sale. The aforementioned statement answers one rumor that the VASJ administration, faculty and staff have been hearing over the past week regarding the school’s future.

Margaret Lyons, Superintendent of Schools and Secretary for Education of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, addressed this by saying, “Confusion may have arisen because of a print advertisement by the real estate company concerning the nearby St. Joseph Christian Life Center property. What is for sale is only the 11 acres of the former Christian Life Center and the advertisement clearly does not include any of VA-St. Joseph High School property.”

A recent message on the school’s front marquee that alluded to a big announcement being made in the coming months may have also created some confusion. According to Jim Sukys, VASJ President, “The big announcement in the fall has nothing to do with VASJ being sold, moved, closed or merged. It is an announcement that will demonstrate our commitment to improve, expand and enhance Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School’s offerings on our current property and into the future.” Sukys continued by saying, “VASJ is actively searching for the best and brightest students in Northeast Ohio as we continue to provide the most well-rounded, ‘real world’ college-prep-plus education in Northeast Ohio.”

VASJ’s predecessor schools, Villa Angela Academy and St. Joseph High School, both epitomized what it meant to be rich educational institutions, founded in strong moral, spiritual and academic quality. Those traditions are still carried on today at Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School as one cohesive, collective model of achievement.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School is a Catholic, comprehensive, coeducational school committed to high academic achievement, and the development of student gifts. Sponsored by the Ursulines of Cleveland and the Marianists and owned by the Diocese of Cleveland, Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School strives to bring each student to a deeper commitment to Jesus Christ and Gospel values. Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School began in 1990 through the merging of all-girls school Villa Angela Academy and all-boys school St. Joseph High School."

Waterloo Arts Fest a Growing Success!

This past Saturday, August 2nd, was the fourth annual Waterloo Arts Festival. Each year, the event gets better and better.

The day was filled with music, vendors, family and fun. There were tons of children's activities. Kid's could run through water sculptures, make drums to take home, and create their own chalk art.

We were particularly tickled to see Jerry Schmidt's write-up in the Plain Dealer Arts and Life Section on Saturday. That was a wonderful surprise and some great publicity for the event. If you missed it, you can check it out at:
http://www.cleveland.com/plaindealer/stories/index.ssf?/base/living-1/1217665950316100.xml&coll=2

It was also great to see all the merchants that got into the act. Whether it was Popsicles at Shoparooni or gyros from Fotina's, a great number of merchants and galleries showed off for the consistently strong crowd.

We want to also thank NASA and Vitamin Water for sponsoring the event. It was great to see their displays. It was also nice to get a refreshing drink from Vitamin Water or to enjoy the air conditioning on the NASA bus.

I hope you made it out to this great event. Please feel free to add a comment about your thoughts on the festival.

Walkthrough of Horseshoe Bar

During a recent meeting of the East 185th Street Block Watch, it became clear that not everyone is aware of the dilapidated condition of the Horseshoe Bar (located at 749 East 185th Street). Several potential developers have viewed the space and determined that the building is too far gone to be repaired. They have commented the building has structural issues and mold issues due to a backed up sewer and leaking roof.

Several concerned residents have shared that they are not convinced the building can't be saved. As such, the property owner (in cooperation with the developers proposing a car wash at the site) are hosting a public walkthrough of the building. Anyone interested in seeing the condition of the property is invited to the building on Friday, August 1st between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. Due to the condition of the property, all visitors are required to sign a liability waiver. It may be a good idea to consider bringing your own flashlight and facemask as well.

Safety Fair huge success!

The Safety Fair was a huge success.

Big Momma was there! That's the police SWAT tank.

The fire department brought the "smoke house" for children to climb through and learn how to escape from a building fire.

Police officers roasted hot dogs by the dozens! The auto theft unit held a drawing for automobile anti-theft devices.

Barb won one and as soon as she read the directions, she expects to start using the device.

Kids were given book bags, pencils, coloring books and all kinds of cool stuff.

Blood pressure testing was available for folks along with health tips.

Thanks to Dave's Market for hot dogs and the use of their
parking lot.

Thanks to the Cleveland Police for a fun
afternoon.

Rebuilding Together helps elderly resident!

Shirley Napier was selected by Rebuilding Together Cleveland to receive substantial assistance to improve her home. Ms. Napier has lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years and Northeast Shores recommended she receive assistance from the program.

Rebuilding Together is a nationwide nonprofit volunteer organization set up to provide rehabilitation and repairs to homes owned by individuals and families on a limited income with a focus on the elderly and disabled. This program offers simple home repairs and maintenance that can be physically, if not financially, impossible to handle by the resident. It is designed to bring corporations, neighbors and volunteers together to repair and paint pre-selected homes. This year, Ms. Napier was the one selected.

Stephanie Thomas, Housing Programs Manager for Northeast Shores, met Ms. Napier last year after she was cited from the city. Stephanie nominated her last year but she was not selected, since another one of our nominees was selected that year. So now here is her time to shine!

East Shore Concert!

K B & the Riptides played their beach music Thursday night at the East Shore Park Club. This was a free concert open to the public.

The band was great. The people were friendly and they all enjoyed reading the latest copy of the Northeast Shore lines which was passed out by Nancy Croft. The concert was from 7-9pm. If it would have been outside like it was planned, it would have been more fun but nobody there let the rain spoil their fun.

A good time was had by all including Denise's 13 year old who did not want to go at first, then when she got there, she didn't want to leave. The next concert is July 3 with Jonah Koslin (he used to be with the Michael Stanley Band. I strongly encourage you to go to one of these concerts if you get the chance.

P.S. While the concert is free (because of funds provided by Neighborhood Connections) they will accept donations. Northeast Shores is the fiscal agent for the East Shore Park Block Club.

Mayor Jackson was here

Last night, City of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson hosted his annual town hall meeting. Over 100 neighborhood residents and business owners were in attendance.

The Mayor answered questions about the status of the Recreation Center, neighborhood policing, abandoned homes, speeding tickets, community planning, and the Euclid Beach Carrousel.

This was the third year that the Mayor has come out to answer questions from the community. We want to thank the Mayor and his staff for their commitment to the City. And we want to really thank the attendees that came out and represented the neighborhood so strongly.

One Goes UP!

Anyone that has travelled near the corner of East 185th Street and Lakeshore Boulevard has seen big changes! The exterior of the new Rite Aid is nearly completely up. At this pace, it is fair to believe that the store will open as scheduled by September of this year.

Since Medic Drug left the region in 2005, the East 185th Street area has been without a pharmacy within walking distance. We are very excited that Rite Aid responded to our market data that we sent in 2006. Since that initial discussion, we have worked with Rite Aid officials on finding the best location for their new flagship store. While the location selected wasn't our initial preference, landing this national drug store chain on the street and having them build a new building shows the strength of this neighborhood. We welcome the progress made so far and look forward to the grand opening!

... And One Comes Down!

This week, the final remnants of the Europa Building will be demolished. This building was built in the early 1970s and housed the travel agency for three decades at the corner of East 185th Street and Neff Road. The building was deconstructed in hopes that it will find a new home. Rumours have the building being reconstructed as near by as Madison or as far away as California. Regardless, this interesting structure will rise again, but where has yet to be determined.

With the site cleared, construction crews will being immediately building a state-of-the-art Key Bank building. This new branch will replace their existing East 185th Street site and will have some incredible amenities. Northeast Shores staff had the privilege to view a prototype for the new branch and we were incredibly impressed. The plans are for the new branch to open in early January, 2009. We want to thank Key Bank in advance for their significant neighborhood investment that this new building represents.

Looking for Waterloo Walls Brain Trust!

Waterloo Walls Project

The Waterloo Walls project will initiate and organize the creation of public art on the street. There are (at least) eight potential mural opportunities as proposed in the streetscape plan. Although the implementation of most of the streetscape will have to wait for months, if not years, these murals can be done relatively easily and cheaply. The Waterloo Walls project is an effort to kick off the restoration of the street by declaring these eight walls as public canvases that will express the voice of the community. This goal will be achieved by organizing a set of tools, guidelines, and incentives for the creation of public art.

The Brain Trust

The brain trust will be a select group of artists, merchants, design professionals, and other community leaders who are interested (in) guiding the walls project. It will be this group that not only establishes the goals and structure of the project as a whole but also serves as support network and artistic director for each individual mural.

The main purpose of the group will be to facilitate and motivate participation in the mural project, essentially to ensure that the murals not only happen but that they are a (strong) representation of what the community has to offer. The purpose of the group is not to provide approval or regulation but to make sure that it is worthwhile, supportive, and rewarding for artists, building owners, and the community as a whole to participate.

Additionally the group will serve as liaison between the building owners, artists, merchants association, marketing committee, and design review board. Ultimately building owners can put whatever they like on their own buildings (or nothing at all for that matter) so it is essential that the group act as a constructive and motivational force.

Although input will be welcomed from all members of the community, the brain trust will be limited to a total of six people. Ideally, most of the group’s communication will happen via email or other online means. The group will meet in person only as needed in order to not place a burden on anyone’s schedule.

If you are interested in serving on this important Brain Trust, please e-mail John Boksansky at jboksansky@northeastshores.org
