No event on East 185th Street this weekend

No, there is no East 185th Street Festival this year. I know that it's been around forever. Actually just the last 28 years. The polka and beer event started out small but grew very large. The cost of the event kept going up! Gambling revenues helped to pay for $50,000 worth, $25,000 worth of entertainment. The State of Ohio changed the gambling laws and Northeast Shores could no longer benefit from the profits. In 2006, Northeast Shores lost $12,000. Can't keep doing that so the Board decided to not sponsor the festival in 2007. The East 185th Street merchants were working to pull off a festival event but plans did not come together for this year. Sorry that there is no festival but the East 185th Street merchants and restaurants are still open for business. Try something new. Have dinner at anyone of the many great places along the mile long strip. Or just take the dog for a walk and stop at Mickey's for ice cream. Lot's of summer things to do around the neighborhood.

Get some money to continue your community project

North Shores Collinwood has sponsored MANY Neighborhood Connections Grant applications. The next grant deadline is August 10th at 5:00 pm. Does your community group have an idea that could use some financial support? Examples here in our own backyard include, Arts Collinwood youth classes, Huntmere block party, Macauley Health Fair, computer center, community garden equipment, East Shore Park Club music, Overlook Park music, Beachland Park music, the list goes on. Lakeshore Merchants This Thursday

In the past several months, the Lakeshore Merchants Association has started meeting again. Although attendance is not great, interest is high. Northeast Shores Board Member, Frank Brodnick was the acting Committee Chairperson. Unfortunately, we lost Frank on June 22nd. Without his enthusiasm, the committee could be in big trouble. The next meeting of the Lakeshore Merchants Assoc. takes place on Thursday, July 26th, 9:00 am at the Lakeshore Golden Age Center. Let's hope that the merchants will step up to the plate and show their leadership and interest in this commercial district. Councilman Michael Polensek strongly supports this group. Residents will support businesses that care. Show you care. Come to the meeting.

Wine and Cheese!

The East 147-148-149th St. Block Club is having a Wine and Cheese Tasting Event
Saturday, August 11th, 4:00-7:00 pm on the corner of Lakeshore Blvd. and East 148th St.
A $10 donation will not only buy you a taste, but will support the Block Club purchase school supplies for neighborhood children. Block Club Chairperson, Mrs. Earlean Flood always hosts a great party and with the support of Mrs. Marquarite Hill, this should be a great event. Need a roof?

Are you in need of a new roof but continue to put it off?
Like me!
My roof is 30 years old. Although it's still in place, it's drying out and the edges are starting to curl up.
I don't look at the ceiling in that one second floor bedroom because I'm hoping the water stain will go away.
The roof will probably cost about $5,000.
If I spend the money on the roof, it's just one more year I don't get my dream vacation in Paris or Tokyo.
I have the line of credit that I used for the siding and new windows.
I don't want to spend the money but now that the furnace has been replaced, the roof is next.
Then my boss, Brian starts talking about an idea generated by Judge Pianka about group buying for residential roofs.
The Judge is trying to gather 10 residents who are financially able to replace their roof and would do it if there were some breaks available.
Breaks such as; group buying power, low interest loans.

PD Schwebel's Story Premature

In the Sunday Plain Dealer (7/8/07, page B4), a story ran about the potential loss of the Schwebel's Bakery Outlet located on East 185th Street.
This story was very disappointing to read, because the timing of the article is seriously premature. Although plans have been presented to replace the exisiting buildings at the corner of East 185th Street and Lakeshore Boulevard with a Rite Aid, Rite Aid has not executed their options on the properties. Once the options are executed (which is expected in the next 90 days), then Schwebel's has six months until they have to vacate their space. Until that time, Schwebel's is required to pay rent at their current location.
Northeast Shores and the City of Euclid have made many efforts to begin finding Schwebel's a new location on East 185th Street, but the owner of Schwebel's feels these efforts are too early. I don't blame him! He has not received word yet that he may have to move almost a year from now. Spaces that we may show him now may not be available when they need to move and other spaces may be available that aren't today.
Our position that this story was premature was shared with the Plain Dealer. They ran the story anyways. We can only request and hope that the Plain Dealer runs another story in nine months when Schwebel's reopens at their new, yet-to-be-determined location.

We Lost a Great One

On June 22, Northeast Shores was holding a great fundraiser at the Beachland Ballroom when Frank Brodnick was stricken by a major heart attack and passed away.

Losing Frank will have a major impact on the neighborhood. Frank was extremely dedicated to the community and was a major force when it comes to many major endeavors.

If it wasn't for Frank, the Euclid Beach Arch would not have been rebuilt.

Please help us remember Frank's memory and passion by becoming more involved in our efforts to improve Euclid Beach State Park and Lakeshore Boulevard.

Save-A-Lot coming to East 185th Street

This past week, Northeast Shores was instrumental in acquiring the former Tops site. Soon after Independence Day, the existing store and parking lot will be transferred to Save-A-Lot. Save-A-Lot is investing $3 million in the site and is excited to become a major part of the East 185th Street Business District. Details about the other two sites on the street are coming soon.
