Waterloo Named One Of America’s Best Secret Neighborhoods!

Waterloo Arts District, Cleveland, OH, October 24, 2008 – The Waterloo Arts District was recently named one of “America’s Best Secret Neighborhoods” by Travel & Leisure Magazine, ranking alongside neighborhoods in San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Miami, among others.

The article reads:

Collinwood, Cleveland, Ohio

Then: Immigrants from Croatia and Slovenia came here in the 1880’s to work in the railroad yards of this shoreside neighborhood in the far northeast corner of the city.

Now: A neighborhood development group started to stimulate growth in 2004 by buying buildings and leasing them at low cost to boho businesses such as Music Saves, an indie-rock record store selling original vinyl as well as tickets to rock shows at the next-door Beachland Ballroom.

Don’t Miss: Slovenian smoked sausage at Raddell’s Sausage Shop, supplying Clevelanders with bona fide Eastern European meats since 1979.

Arabica 2.0 coming soon!

On a very sad Friday in September, the Arabica on East 185th Street served its last latte. Quoting increasing costs and rough sales in a troubled regional economy, the owner of Arabica, John Bausone, decided he could not renew his lease and decided to close the business. Northeast Shores has received countless phone calls from concerned residents about losing their corner coffee shop.

Not to fear! The Arabica on East 185th Street will reopen soon. We learned last night that corporate Arabica has issued a new franchise for that location. The business owner's name is Jim.

We understand Arabica will reopen by December 1, 2008. Until then, weep as you sip your Folger's.

Northeast Shores sponsors Purple Light Nights

Northeast Shores has joined the Domestic Violence Center (DVC) in recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Please join the Domestic Violence Center (DVC) and Northeast Shores as we light up the neighborhood during the month of October to raise awareness of the critical issue of domestic violence.

DVC is sponsoring Purple Light Nights™, a campaign designed to shine a light on a problem that is often associated with silence and shame. Domestic violence extends far beyond physical abuse. It is a growing problem that can be battled through awareness. Help us ensure the safety of our community’s women, children, and teens during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Individuals can shine a purple light in their window or on the front porch of their home throughout October – an easy, low-cost way to start the conversation about domestic violence prevention. Northeast Shores has a limited number of purple light bulbs to distribute to the neighborhood. Please contact Denise Lorek at dlorek@northeastshores.org if you would like to participate. Purple Light Bulbs are also available for sale at all Heinen's Grocery Stores throughout the month of October.

Purple Light Nights™ was first launched in King County, Washington in October 2007 by the Covington Domestic Violence Task Force. Residents, Local businesses, and public institutions shined a purple light in their window or on their porch from October 1st - 31st, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The color purple is specifically used because it has long been recognized as the international color symbolic of domestic violence.

For questions, more info, or to obtain bulk light bulbs, contact: Lizzie Ackerman @ eackerman@dvccleveland.org or 216-688-7229.

Also, check out www.domesticviolencecenter.org for more county-wide Purple Light Nights events throughout October.

Arts Collinwood Open House this Saturday!

Did you miss "Assemblage"? If you did, shame on you since you were not one of the first people to see the amazing new community center at the Arts Collinwood Building. Assemblage was one heck of shindig and YOU missed it! Shame, shame, shame!

We can forgive you! We understand! It was a busy weekend with the whole Euclid Beach event also occurring in the neighborhood. But, we expect you to make amends!

Come this Saturday, October 4th to the FREE open house of the new community center located at the corner of Waterloo Road and East 156th Street. It's free and open to all ages, with great activities, entertainment, free food!!!

The event is so big! It has its own press release:

Arts Collinwood will open its new arts center to the community with a free public open house from 4-6pm on October 4, 2008. Art exhibits, Capoeira demonstrations and samples of programs to be offered in the center this fall will provide a full plate of entertainment, along with activities for families and children and free refreshments. It is free to all ages. Anyone interested in finding out more about Arts Collinwood and its offerings should drop in.

This celebration marks the culmination of a 4-year renovation process. “We’ve worked for many years to reach this point,”: says Steve Manka, Chair of the Arts Collinwood Board. “This is the final phase of a major effort to restore a blighted building to a center of art in the community. We’re very proud of what our members and volunteers have done in helping to make this a reality.”

Thousands of volunteer hours and considerable contributions from the community and donors have furthered a project that began with a partially abandoned building and now houses a multi-use arts center. The first space opened was the Arts Collinwood Gallery, followed by a café and studios. The community arts center is the final piece of a long-range plan that has made this historic building an anchor of the emerging Waterloo arts district.

Arts Collinwood acknowledges support from Funders including the Thomas White Foundation, the Abington Foundation, the Krieger Foundation, the Northeast Shores Development Corporation’s Capital Improvements Grant and the George Gund Foundation for support that has helped to make this project possible.

See you Saturday on Waterloo!
